Chapter 12 - Barrel of a Gun

The six tactical operatives moved with silent, brutal efficiency, spreading out in a semi-circle that completely blocked every possible exit from the grand foyer. Their automatic weapons were equipped with heavy suppressors, and the laser sights painted ominous, glowing red dots across the marble floor and up the walls. Clara’s breath caught in her throat, her hand gripping the fabric of Julian’s jacket so hard her knuckles turned completely white. They were completely outmatched, surrounded in a pitch-black mansion with a resurrected tyrant who held all the cards.

Richard Vance leaned heavily on his ivory cane, a smug, triumphant grin stretching across his wrinkled face as he watched the laser sights settle squarely on Julian’s chest.

"You see, Julian," Richard said, his voice dripping with condescension as he paced slowly back and forth like a general inspecting his captured territory. "You're a brilliant strategist. You figured out the offshore accounts, you exposed Arthur’s embezzlement, and you even tracked down the vault release. But you made one fundamental error: you assumed I cared about the family name."

Julian remained entirely motionless, his breathing slow and controlled. His right hand remained buried deep inside his coat pocket, his fingers firmly wrapped around his weapon, calculating the exact trajectory, the distance, and the reaction time of six armed professionals.

"You don't care about the family name, Richard," Julian replied, his voice remaining chillingly calm, slicing through the tension like a razor. "You only care about self-preservation. That's why you faked your death a decade ago when the federal investigators got too close to your cartel connections."

Richard’s smug expression faltered for a fraction of a second, a micro-expression of genuine shock flashing across his aged face before he quickly regained his composure.

"You talk too much, Julian," Richard snapped, his voice losing its playful edge and turning dangerously sharp. "And history has a way of repeating itself for people who ask too many questions. Men... secure the ledger, and make sure there are no loose ends left in this foyer."

The lead tactical operative took a sharp step forward, raising his weapon as he advanced directly toward Julian and Clara. The red laser dot danced across Julian’s collarbone, stopping right over his heart. Clara closed her eyes for a split second, bracing herself for the inevitable, but instead of surrendering, Julian’s posture suddenly snapped into explosive motion.

With lightning-fast reflexes, Julian drew his weapon from his coat pocket and fired two deafening shots into the overhead chandelier wiring in one fluid motion.

A shower of blinding sparks rained down from the ceiling as the massive crystal structure short-circuited and plunged downward, crashing violently between Julian and the tactical team with an earsplitting roar of shattering glass and splintered metal.

Shouts of surprise echoed in the sudden chaos as smoke and dust filled the foyer, completely blinding the armed operatives and breaking their formation.

"Run, Clara!" Julian yelled, grabbing her hand and yanking her forcefully toward the private library corridor before the smoke could even begin to clear.

They sprinted blindly into the dark, labyrinthine hallways of the mansion, their footsteps echoing off the walls as shouts and heavy boots pounded the marble behind them.

They slammed the heavy oak door of the private library shut behind them and threw the deadbolt just as a burst of suppressed gunfire chewed through the wooden panels right beside Clara’s head.
