Chapter 6 - Sirens in the Night

The wailing sirens tore through the midnight air, growing deafeningly loud as a fleet of unmarked black police cruisers and flashing patrol cars surged up the grand driveway. Red and blue lights cast erratic, strobing shadows across the white columns and the crimson-carpeted stairs, painting the entire facade in an ominous, chaotic glow. Clara watched in sheer disbelief as the vehicles slammed to a halt at the foot of the steps, doors flying open to reveal armed officers stepping out with grim, purposeful strides.

Victoria Vance stood tall on the landing, her sharp smile widening into a triumphant grin as she watched the flashing lights reflect in her cold eyes.

"Did you really think you were the only one playing chess tonight, Julian?" Victoria’s voice dripped with condescension. "You brought your little encrypted drive and your court orders, completely blind to the trap waiting for you at the center of the board. Officer! Up here!" she called out, raising a manicured hand to guide the leading detective toward the foyer.

Julian did not panic. His jaw clenched, but his posture remained rigid and entirely unshakeable. He slowly slid his hand into his coat pocket, his fingers brushing against the encrypted drive one last time before he pulled them out empty. He looked down at Clara, his dark eyes softening just a fraction, communicating a silent message of reassurance amidst the encroaching storm.

"Stay behind me, Clara," Julian murmured quietly, his voice a steady anchor in the swirling madness. "No matter what happens next, do not let go of my hand."

Clara nodded mutteringly, her fingers sliding into his palm and squeezing tightly. The harsh glare of a police flashlight suddenly swept across their faces as two heavy-set officers marched up the marble steps, pushing past the shattered glass and ignoring the crumpled, pathetic figure of Arthur Vance still whimpering on the floor.

"Which one of you is Julian Vance?" the lead detective demanded, flashing an open badge bearing the name Detective Miller. His face was carved from granite, bearing the weary, cynical look of a man who had seen every brand of corporate corruption the city had to offer.

"I am Julian Vance," Julian replied smoothly, stepping forward to shield Clara completely from the blinding light. "And I suggest you check your jurisdiction before you take another step, Detective, unless your department enjoys paying out multi-million dollar wrongful arrest settlements."

Detective Miller stopped dead in his tracks, narrowing his eyes as he assessed Julian’s expensive tailored suit, his absolute calm demeanor, and the unmistakable aura of untouchable wealth. He glanced back toward Victoria Vance, who was currently wearing the expression of a puppet master whose strings were suddenly snapping.

"Mr. Vance," Detective Miller said, his tone shifting from aggressive to intensely cautious. "We received an anonymous tip originating from a secure terminal inside this very mansion. The caller uploaded complete financial records alleging massive corporate espionage, illegal asset stripping, and conspiracy to commit fraud. And the digital signature on the upload... pointed directly to your encrypted key."

Victoria’s triumphant smile faltered instantly, her eyes widening in sudden, unadulterated shock as she stared at the detective.

"Wait—what?" Victoria stammered, losing her composed facade for the first time. "That’s impossible! The tip was supposed to implicate him and the girl for hacking into our systems!"

Detective Miller turned slowly, fixing Victoria with a cold, piercing stare that made her blood run cold.

"How did you know the tip was about hacking, Mrs. Vance?" Detective Miller asked softly, his voice loaded with lethal implication. "We haven't mentioned the word 'hacking' to anyone yet."
