Chapter 1 - The Broken Promise on the Velvet Stairs

The heavy midnight air felt thick with deception as the harsh flash of distant paparazzi lights cut through the darkness outside the sprawling, white-columned estate. Clara sat huddled on the crimson carpet of the grand marble stairway, her silk white dress stained with salt tears and crushed pride. Wrapped tightly in a cashmere shawl, she shook uncontrollably, her chest heaving as she tried to catch her breath. Just a few feet away, another couple in high-end formal wear—a man in a sharp tuxedo and a woman in a sweeping red evening gown—glanced down at her with cold, dismissive indifference before stepping past her into the brightly lit foyer. Clara wanted to scream, but the shock froze her vocal cords entirely.

A sleek black luxury car idled at the foot of the stairs, its engine humming a low, mechanical growl. Julian stepped out from the back seat, adjusting the lapels of his tailored black double-breasted suit with absolute calm. His dark eyes locked onto Clara immediately, cutting through the chaotic noise of the gala behind them. He did not rush, but his strides were purposeful, eating up the distance between the driveway and the lower steps.

When he reached her, Julian did not offer empty platitudes or forced smiles. Instead, he knelt slowly on the plush red carpet, ignoring the dirt and moisture ruining the knees of his expensive trousers. He reached out and gently gripped her trembling hand, his touch warm and steady. Clara looked up, her face streaked with tears, her red eyes burning with a mixture of betrayal and absolute despair. She clutched her shawl tighter around her thin shoulders, trying to shield herself from the freezing wind and the cruel judgment echoing from the open doors above.

Julian shifted his weight, rising smoothly to his feet while keeping a protective arm firmly around Clara's waist. Together, they turned to face the upper landing, where Arthur Vance stood leaning casually against the railing, a smug grin plastered across his face. Arthur held a crystal champagne flute, swirling the amber liquid as if he owned the very ground they stood upon.

Julian tightened his grip on Clara, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. He narrowed his eyes at the man who had orchestrated this entire public humiliation. The ambient music from inside the ballroom seemed to fade into a dull hum, leaving only the sound of the wind rattling the wrought-iron gates.

Julian stared straight at Arthur, his voice dropping into a cold, lethal register that carried easily across the marble steps.

"What are you doing with Mr. Vance?" Julian demanded firmly, his tone laced with a dangerous warning.

May you like

Arthur merely laughed, taking a slow sip of his drink before leaning forward to whisper something directly into the ear of the woman in the red gown standing beside him.
