Chapter 3 - Shards of Glass and Hidden Ledger

The sharp crack of breaking crystal echoed violently against the marble foyer, freezing the handful of lingering socialites in their tracks. Shards of crystal and amber droplets scattered across the pristine floor like jagged stars, mirroring the shattered illusion of Arthur Vance’s untouchable facade. Clara stood frozen, the adrenaline of her outburst pulsing through her veins, while Julian’s gaze locked onto the exact moment Arthur lost his composure. The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the distant, rhythmic hum of the luxury car idling at the bottom of the steps.
Arthur took an involuntary half-step backward, his boots crunching on the glittering debris. The smug, untouchable veneer he had worn all evening had completely evaporated, replaced by a frantic, hunted look in his eyes. Elena grabbed his arm, whispering something urgent into his ear, but Arthur shook her off violently, his eyes darting toward the security guards stationed near the double doors.
"She's lying," Arthur spat out, his voice cracking slightly before he forced it back into a commanding register. "The woman is clearly hysterical, completely unhinged by the stress of tonight's rejection. Security, remove these intruders from the premises immediately."
None of the guards moved. They knew Julian too well; they also knew the terrifying reputation of the man who owned half the commercial real estate in the city. Julian took a slow, deliberate step up the red-carpeted stairs, his polished shoes clicking with lethal precision against the fabric. Every step he took forced Arthur to retreat further into the brightly lit foyer, stripping him of his territorial advantage.
"You can't order security around in a house you don't legally own yet, Arthur," Julian said softly, stopping just three steps below the landing. He reached into his inner suit pocket with agonizing slowness, pulling out a slim, dark leather portfolio. "Especially not when the primary lienholder is standing right here."
Clara watched, her heart hammering against her ribs, as Julian flipped open the leather folder. Inside rested a single, thick document bearing the unmistakable golden seal of the federal district court and the signature of the senior Vance patriarch—Arthur’s ailing father.
"What... what is that?" Elena finally spoke, her voice dropping the honeyed sweetness for a sharp, panicked edge as she stepped in front of Arthur.
Julian looked up, his dark eyes meeting Elena's with absolute contempt.
"This," Julian said smoothly, lifting the document so the hallway lights caught the golden seal, "is the asset-seizure order for every single property, account, and trust the Vance family currently controls—including the very shoes on your feet, Elena."
