Chapter 5 - The Voice from the Shadows

"Not so fast, Julian."
The clipped, authoritative cadence sliced through the heavy silence of the foyer, carrying an undeniable weight of command that forced both Julian and Clara to halt mid-stride. From the dim, unlit corridor branching off toward the mansion’s private library, a tall, slender silhouette emerged into the warm glow of the crystal chandeliers. It was Victoria Vance—Arthur’s formidable, fiercely calculating aunt and the hidden matriarch of the family trust. Her silver hair was pulled back into an immaculate chignon, and her emerald necklace gleamed with an unforgiving, predatory fire.
Arthur scrambled frantically on the floor, dragging himself toward his aunt's polished velvet shoes like a desperate child seeking refuge.
"Aunt Victoria! Tell them! Tell them Julian is forging documents!" Arthur cried out, his voice cracking with pathetic desperation as he clutched at the hem of her dark emerald gown. "He's trying to steal everything—the house, the accounts, the entire estate!"
Victoria did not even look down at her nephew. With a look of absolute disgust, she gently nudged Arthur away with the toe of her shoe, as if he were nothing more than an annoying insect tracked in from the mud outside. Her sharp, calculating eyes locked directly onto Clara, scanning the young woman's tear-stained face and the ruined white dress with chilling clinical detachment.
"Get up off the floor, Arthur," Victoria commanded coldly, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "You have embarrassed this family enough for one lifetime. Dragging our name through the dirt with your amateurish embezzlement is unforgivable. But..." She paused, slowly shifting her gaze from Clara to Julian, a thin, razor-sharp smile forming on her lips. "...that does not mean Mr. Vance here gets to walk away with the keys to the kingdom."
Julian stepped forward smoothly, placing himself protectively in front of Clara once again, his expression hardening into an impenetrable mask.
"The acquisition is legally binding, Victoria," Julian stated, his tone flat and unyielding. "The board ratified the transfer at sundown. You no longer have the voting majority to block it."
"The board?" Victoria let out a dry, humorless laugh that sounded like dry leaves scraping across pavement. "My dear Julian, you rely far too much on paper and signatures. You assume the board answers to corporate law, forgetting entirely that this family operates on a much older, much darker set of rules."
Clara felt a cold shiver run straight down her spine, far colder than the midnight wind howling outside the open doors. She stepped closer to Julian, her hand lightly brushing against his sleeve, sensing that the danger had only just begun.
"What rules are you talking about, Victoria?" Clara asked, her voice steady despite the overwhelming terror gripping her chest.
Victoria took two slow, deliberate steps forward, the emeralds on her neck catching the light like drops of fresh blood. She stopped just inches away from them, her eyes narrowing into slits of pure malice.
"The rule that says no outsider ever takes control of the Vance estate," Victoria whispered, her voice dropping to a venomous hiss. "And if you think Arthur’s little public humiliation was bad, wait until the police arrive to arrest you both for corporate espionage."

Before Julian could reply, the piercing wail of multiple police sirens suddenly shattered the quiet night, rapidly echoing up the long, winding driveway toward the front steps.
