Chapter 9

The office door creaked open, casting a narrow wedge of dim hallway light across the Persian rug. Heavy, deliberate footsteps entered the room. Clara pressed herself flat against the wall behind the thick velvet drapes, her heart hammering against her ribs, though her outward demeanor remained terrifyingly calm.
Through a small gap in the fabric, she saw a tall silhouette silhouetted against the ambient light from the hallway. The man was broad-shouldered, wearing the dark uniform jacket of Meridian Trust’s elite security detail. He stepped further into the room, holding a small tactical flashlight. The beam swept across the desk, illuminating the half-drunk cup of coffee and the glowing computer monitor.
"I know you're here, Ms. Miller," a deep, controlled voice whispered into the darkness. It wasn't an anonymous intruder; it was Marcus Vance.
Clara remained completely motionless. She regulated her breathing, drawing in slow, silent breaths through her nose.
Marcus walked slowly toward the window, his boots clicking softly on the floorboards. He stopped just inches from the drapes where Clara was hiding. The beam of his flashlight cut across the fabric, casting ghostly shadows against the wall.
"You think you’ve won because my sister is behind bars," Marcus continued, his voice dripping with quiet menace. "You think you can waltz in here with your righteous little portfolio and tear down everything my family built over decades. But you don't understand how things work in this world, Clara. People like you—outsiders who think rules matter—always end up breaking under the right kind of pressure."
Clara’s hand slid into her jacket pocket, her fingers closing tightly around the cold metal casing of the thumb drive. She knew if she moved, he would catch her. But she also knew she couldn't stay hidden forever.
Suddenly, a sharp chime echoed from the main elevator bank down the hall—the distinct sound of an arrival bell.
Marcus stiffened. He turned his head toward the open office door as heavy footsteps approached down the corridor, accompanied by the familiar, calm voice of Julian Sterling.
"Clara? Are you still burning the midnight oil in here?" Julian called out, his footsteps drawing closer.
Marcus cursed under his breath, snapped off his flashlight, and turned around, rushing out of the office just as Julian’s silhouette appeared in the doorway.
Julian flicked the wall switch, flooding the office with bright overhead light. He blinked against the sudden glare, then saw Clara stepping out from behind the drapes, her grey suit immaculate, her expression resolute.
"Are you alright?" Julian asked, his eyes wide with sudden concern. "I thought I heard someone leaving as I came down the hall."
May you like
"You did," Clara said, her voice steady. "And now we know the security team isn't just watching us—they’re hunting us."
