THE MIDNIGHT LEDGER / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1

The marble floor of the Meridian Trust executive suite was cold against Clara’s bruised knee. She was thirty-five, wearing a charcoal-grey suit with her dark hair neatly tied back, though a few strands had come loose during the sudden violence. Just moments ago, Eleanor Vance, a towering forty-five-year-old blonde in an impeccably tailored black dress, had kicked Clara out of her black leather chair, sending her tumbling down with an open folder of loose papers scattering everywhere.

"I have an appointment here," Eleanor had snarled, her voice dripping with haughty entitlement. Then came the cruelty that cut deeper than the physical blow. Standing over Clara with armed security guards looming in the background, Eleanor had delivered the crushing verdict: "Trash! Private banking is not for you. Take your papers to a cheap bank!"

Clara had dropped to her hands and knees, gathering the scattered pages with trembling fingers. She wore a frightened expression, her breath coming in shallow gasps as she crawled toward the heavy mahogany double doors, clutching the documents to her chest while the guards watched in indifferent silence.

Then the heavy doors swung open. Julian Sterling, a distinguished fifty-year-old white man with refined silver hair and a dark, perfectly fitted suit, stepped into the room. He looked down at Clara on the floor, his eyes narrowing in cold realization.

"You just gave her the proof she came for," Julian said, his voice cutting through the tense air like a scalpel.

Eleanor spun around sharply, her face draining of color. "Proof? What?" she stammered, the arrogant mask cracking instantly to reveal stark panic.

Clara slowly pushed herself up, clutching the papers tighter. She didn’t look like a defeated applicant anymore. She looked like an investigator who had just won her case. Julian gestured for Clara to stand, ignoring Eleanor’s sputtering protests as the security guards shifted uneasily. The trap had been sprung, and Eleanor had walked right into it, completely unaware that her public display of corporate bullying had just signed her professional death warrant.
