Chapter 10

Julian locked the office door from the inside, pulling the heavy wooden blinds shut over the glass panel. The urgency in the room was palpable. He walked over to Clara, his distinguished face lined with genuine worry.

"If Marcus Vance was in your office, he knows you’ve found something substantial," Julian said, running a hand through his grey hair. "He’s not like Eleanor. She was arrogant and sloppy. Marcus is methodical, patient, and completely ruthless when he feels his family's interests are threatened."

Clara pulled the small metal thumb drive from her pocket and placed it squarely in the center of the mahogany desk. "He didn't find what he was looking for. The master files are right here. But more importantly, Mr. Sterling, I found the connection between Eleanor’s embezzlement and the rest of the board."

Julian looked down at the drive, then back up at Clara. "Tell me."

"It wasn't just offshore accounts," Clara explained, pulling up a chair and gesturing for Julian to sit. "The stolen capital was funneled into a domestic blind trust controlled by Marcus. And that blind trust has direct financial ties to three regional vice presidents currently sitting on your board of directors. They weren't just looking the other way, Mr. Julian. They were business partners."

Julian exhaled slowly, sinking into the leather chair. The revelation didn't shock him as much as it exhausted him. He had suspected internal corruption for years, but seeing the full scope laid out with undeniable mathematical proof was staggering. "They’ve been using the bank as a private piggy bank to fund their personal real estate empires and political contributions."

"Exactly," Clara said. "And tomorrow morning at the board meeting, they’re going to try to shut down the audit committee before it even begins. They’ll vote to terminate my position, seal the records, and claim internal restructuring."

"They can try," Julian said, a cold, hardened edge returning to his voice. "Because tomorrow morning, I’m exercising clause twelve of the Meridian Trust charter. As majority voting shareholder and Chief Executive Officer, I have the unilateral authority to suspend any board member under credible suspicion of financial fraud."

Clara looked at him, seeing the immense personal risk he was taking. By turning against his own board, Julian was risking his career, his reputation, and potentially his safety. "You realize what this means, don't you? They won't just try to vote you out. They’ll try to destroy you personally."

"Let them try," Julian said, meeting her gaze without flinching. "I’ve spent half my life building an empire of glass and concrete that served greed. It’s time to build something real."
