Chapter 2

The silence in the executive suite grew suffocating. Eleanor’s face twitched as she tried to regain her composure, forcing a brittle, defensive smile that didn't reach her eyes. "Julian, you cannot possibly be serious," she began, her voice pitching slightly higher than usual. "This woman is a common nuisance. She doesn't belong on this floor, let alone in our private tier."
Julian did not look at Eleanor. His gaze remained fixed on Clara, who was now standing, smoothing down the wrinkles of her grey suit with a steady hand. The adrenaline was still pumping through Clara’s veins, but her mind was entirely clear. She held the folder against her chest like a shield. Inside those pages lay the verified wire transfers, the hidden shell company registries, and the internal audit reports that Eleanor had spent months trying to bury.
"The only nuisance in this room, Eleanor, is your complete lack of professional self-control," Julian said quietly. He walked past her, his polished leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the Italian tile. He stopped inches from Clara, his expression softening into a look of solemn professional respect. "Are you alright, Clara?"
"I’m fine, Mr. Sterling," Clara replied, her voice steady and clear, lacking the fear she had feigned earlier. "The physical toll is negligible. What matters is that the documentation is intact."
Eleanor’s breath hitched. She took a half-step forward, her manicured hands clenching into fists at her sides. "Documentation? What nonsense are you talking about? Julian, you’ve known me for over a decade. We built this division together. You’re going to listen to some nobody over me?"
"I built this bank, Eleanor," Julian corrected, turning his head just enough to skewer her with a cold glance. "And I don't need to listen to anyone when the evidence is written in black and white. Or, in this case, scattered across my floor."

The security guards exchanged nervous glances. One of them subtly shifted his weight, clearly unsure whether to maintain his post or quietly back out of the room. Julian raised a single hand, signaling them to remain where they were. He knew as well as Clara did that the next few minutes would dictate the future of Meridian Trust, and perhaps the entire financial district.
