THE MIDNIGHT LEDGER / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8

Upstairs, completely unaware of the threat gathering in the basement, Clara continued her meticulous examination of the digital ledgers. The hours ticked by as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the Manhattan skyline in bruised shades of purple and orange.

Julian had left to handle compliance handlers on the sixteenth floor, leaving Clara alone in her temporary office. The silence of the executive suite was absolute, broken only by the soft clicking of her keyboard and the hum of the overhead ventilation system.

She opened an encrypted folder labeled Project Aegis—the internal code name Eleanor had used to route stolen assets. As Clara scrolled through the transaction logs, something strange caught her attention. A series of large transfers hadn't just gone to offshore shell companies; a significant percentage had been funneled back into domestic real estate holdings under a blind trust.

Clara leaned closer to the monitor, her brow furrowing. She cross-referenced the trust registry with public property records. The owner of the blind trust wasn't Eleanor Vance. It was registered under a corporate shell owned by Marcus Vance—the head of security.

"It wasn't just Eleanor," Clara whispered to the empty room. "It was a family enterprise."

Before she could export the records to her secure external drive, the overhead lights in her office flickered once and died.

The room plunged into sudden darkness, save for the harsh blue glow of her computer monitor. Clara froze, her breathing shallow and controlled. She listened intently, straining her ears against the silence.

A soft, metallic click echoed from the hallway outside her heavy wooden door—the distinct sound of a mechanical lock being bypassed with professional tools.

Clara didn't panic. Her training kicked in instantly. She didn't reach for the desk phone, knowing it was likely routed through the central switchboard controlled by security. Instead, she quietly unplugged her encrypted thumb drive containing the master files, slipped it into the inner pocket of her grey suit jacket, and slid silently out of her chair.

She moved toward the heavy velvet drapes covering the floor-to-ceiling windows, keeping low and out of the direct line of sight from the frosted glass panel of the office door.

The doorknob slowly turned.
