Chapter 3

Eleanor’s calculated facade was completely gone now, replaced by the twitching desperation of a cornered animal. She looked from Julian to Clara, her mind racing to calculate the damage. "You set this up," Eleanor whispered, the realization dawning like a cold sweat. "You orchestrated this entire meeting."
"I merely facilitated an opportunity," Clara said, stepping past Julian to place the open folder on a polished mahogany side table. She smoothed out the top page, exposing the signature line bearing Eleanor’s own initials. "You were so blinded by your own arrogance and class prejudice that you couldn't fathom a woman in a grey suit being anything other than a peasant begging for crumbs. You assumed because I wasn't draped in designer labels, I posed no threat."
Julian walked over to the table, glancing down at the papers without needing to touch them. "Pride goes before destruction, Eleanor. It’s a cliché for a reason. You thought your position as senior vice president made you untouchable. You thought you could siphon funds from dormant accounts and route them through offshore entities without leaving a paper trail."
"It’s standard asset redistribution," Eleanor snapped, her voice cracking as she abandoned all pretense of corporate diplomacy. "Everyone in upper management does it. You think you're saints, Julian? This bank was built on aggressive maneuvers!"
"Not embezzlement," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying an absolute finality that silenced the room. "And certainly not at the expense of vulnerable clients whose life savings you treated like your personal petty cash drawer."
Clara watched Eleanor closely, cataloging every micro-expression. There was no remorse, only anger at being caught. This was the same woman who had ruined dozens of families by quietly freezing their accounts under false compliance pretexts, driving some to financial ruin while she collected her multi-million-dollar bonuses. Clara knew the human cost behind these numbers, having spent the last six months interviewing the victims who had been too intimidated to fight back.

"The compliance board has already received copies of these files," Clara stated, her tone professional and detached. "Along with the federal regulators. The moment you kicked me to the floor, Mr. Sterling arrived just in time to witness the obstruction of due process and witness tampering rolled into one lovely package."
