Chapter 9 - The Underground Escape and the Digital Counter-Attack

The secret maintenance tunnel was damp, narrow, and smelled heavily of rusted iron and stagnant river water, but it offered their only route away from the surrounded warehouse. Clara led the way with her tactical flashlight slicing through the gloom, while Elizabeth covered their rear, her gun drawn and ready.

"Where does this tunnel lead?" Elizabeth asked over the sound of shouting guards echoing from the vault behind them.

"Straight to the old municipal drainage substation two blocks away," Clara panted, her heels clicking rhythmically against the concrete floor as she maintained a blistering pace despite the restrictive satin dress. "From there, we have a clean dead-drop connection to our secure satellite uplink."

They burst out into the freezing night air two minutes later, emerging through a rusted manhole cover hidden behind an abandoned shipping container near the East River. The wind bit sharply through Clara's sleeveless dress, but the adrenaline coursing through her veins kept the cold at bay.

"Hand me the satellite terminal," Clara commanded, dropping down onto a concrete crate and opening the encrypted deployable router she had kept strapped to her thigh.

Elizabeth stood guard by the edge of the pier, her eyes scanning the dark water where a sleek private speedboat bobbed silently against the wooden pilings. "You have three minutes before Pendelton's thermal drones sweep this sector, Clara. Make it count."

Clara's fingers flew across the holographic keyboard projection, bypassing the compromised corporate mainframes entirely to route her command through a darknet relay server in Zurich. "I'm not just subpoenaing Marcus's debt records anymore," she muttered, her eyes locked on the glowing code lines. "I'm deploying a recursive smart-contract bomb straight into Pendelton's primary holding account."

"A smart-contract bomb?" Elizabeth raised an eyebrow. "Explain."

"Julian might have lost our backup data, but he left his master root signature cached in the legacy blockchain ledger," Clara explained rapidly, a triumphant smile breaking across her face. "If I execute this code right now, every single cent Pendelton used to buy out Marcus's debt will be automatically seized by federal anti-money-laundering protocols before the sun rises."

The progress bar on the holographic display ticked upward: 45%... 70%... 90%...

"Clara! Drone inbound at two o'clock!" Elizabeth hissed, raising her weapon and firing two precision shots into the air. The small surveillance drone buzzed wildly, clipped a wooden piling, and plunged into the dark water with a muffled hiss of sparks.

"Execution complete!" Clara slammed her palm down on the enter key just as the progress bar hit 100%. "Pendelton's primary liquidity just hit zero. He's broke."

At that exact moment, the private speedboat drifted closer to the pier, its engine humming in near-silence. A figure in a black trench coat stepped out from the cabin, extending a hand to help them aboard. It was David Vance, the lead attorney.

"I figured you'd need an extraction, ladies," David said calmly as they scrambled onto the deck. "And you picked a good time to pull that trigger. Pendelton's entire financial network just collapsed worldwide."

Clara sank into the leather seat of the speedboat as it surged away from the pier into the dark river. But as she checked her encrypted messages one last time before powering down the terminal, an automated alert flashed across her screen from an unknown sender, containing a single video file labeled: The Truth About Your Father's Death.
