Chapter 3 - The Midnight Phone Call That Shattered Richard Sterling

"Sir, are you certain?" David Vance asked into his phone, turning his back briefly on the panicked crowd.

Victoria used the distraction to grab a heavy crystal decanter from the bar cart, her eyes wild with adrenaline and alcohol. "You think a piece of paper can destroy me? Richard will fix this! Richard is at the bank right now securing a bridge loan!"

"Your husband isn't at any bank, Mrs. Sterling," David said slowly, lowering his phone while maintaining direct eye contact with her. "Mr. Sterling’s corporate jet was just grounded by federal aviation authorities at Teterboro Airport. He was taken into custody ten minutes ago for corporate wire fraud and massive asset stripping."

The crystal decanter slipped from Victoria's fingers, shattering against the marble floor and splashing expensive scotch across the hem of her gold gown. The room fell into a graveyard silence. The guests didn't just walk away; they practically ran toward the valet station.

Clara walked calmly over to the service table, picked up a fresh glass of sparkling water, and took a slow sip. Her eyes were fixed on Victoria's trembling hands. "You spent five years humiliating everyone who didn't fit your exact definition of elite, Victoria. You mocked my mother's charity work, you sabotaged my startup’s funding rounds, and tonight, you thought you could physically assault me in front of fifty witnesses."

"I didn't mean..." Victoria choked out, her voice finally losing its haughty edge, replaced by a pathetic, high-pitched whimper. "Clara, please. We've known each other for years. We're in the same social circle."

"We were never in the same circle," Clara corrected her softly. "We were just trapped in the same room."

Elizabeth placed a warm hand on her daughter's shoulder, guiding her toward the open front doors where the cold night air offered a refreshing contrast to the suffocating drama inside. "Come along, darling. The car is waiting, and we have an early morning meeting with the restructuring committee."

As Clara turned to leave, one of the junior lawyers in the blue suit hurried over, holding a secure encrypted tablet that was flashing a crimson warning light.

"Miss Vance," the lawyer said urgently, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "You need to see this file immediately. Richard Sterling didn't just commit fraud against his own company. He transferred millions into a secret offshore account—and the primary beneficiary isn't Victoria."
