Chapter 7 - The Ransacked Lab and the Missing Hard Drive

"Stay in the car, Clara," Elizabeth commanded, drawing a small, legal firearm from her designer handbag with practiced ease before pushing open the heavy town car door.
Clara ignored the warning, slipping out the opposite side and running low against the brick wall of the warehouse. The cold wind whipped her dark hair across her face as she drew her own encrypted mobile terminal from her pocket to check the local area network ping.
"The analog server is still here," Clara whispered into her headset mic, signaling to her mother as they crept through the shattered glass entryway of the old laboratory. "The ping is coming from the sub-basement vault."
They moved through the dark, cavernous hallway where rows of obsolete mainframe computers hummed with residual energy. The air smelled of ozone, burnt plastic, and damp concrete. As they reached the heavy steel door of the sub-basement vault, they found it unlocked—its digital keypad dangling by frayed wires.
Elizabeth pushed the heavy door open with the barrel of her gun, sweeping the room with a tactical flashlight beam.
The sight inside made them both stop dead in their tracks. Every single rack of offline backup hard drives had been violently ripped out of the reinforced steel chassis. Solder points were smashed, cables hung like severed tendons, and the central cooling unit was hissing white vapor into the freezing air.
"They didn't just steal the data," Clara whispered, dropping to her knees beside a shattered circuit board. "They thermal-welded the motherboard. Every offline backup of my father's core patent has been permanently vaporized."
"Not all of them," a raspy voice echoed from the dark shadows near the back ventilation shaft.
Clara and Elizabeth snapped their weapons toward the noise, the tactical flashlights converging on a slumped figure tied securely to an industrial steel pillar. It was Julian—beaten, bruised, and gasping for breath through a swollen lip.
"Julian!" Clara cried out, rushing forward to check his pulse while Elizabeth kept her gun trained on the dark corners of the room. "What happened? Who did this to you?"
Julian coughed up a fleck of blood, his eyes wide with genuine terror as he looked up at Clara. "I didn't... I didn't transfer the funds, Clara. They used a deepfake biometric clone to override my terminal. I tried to stop them from reaching the offline vault, but..."
"Who, Julian? Who was in this room?" Elizabeth demanded, pressing the barrel of her weapon gently against his collarbone.
Julian shuddered, his trembling finger pointing toward a discarded leather briefcase lying near the ventilation grate. "It was Arthur Pendelton... and he wasn't working alone. He had someone from inside our own family board with him."
Clara stared at Julian in horror. "That's impossible. All of our board members are bound by unbreakable blood oaths."
"Not all of them," Julian whispered, his head dropping back against the steel pillar as he lost consciousness. "Look inside the briefcase."

Clara crawled across the debris-strewn floor, her hands trembling as she unlatched the leather clasps of the briefcase. Inside sat a single, pristine Manila folder bearing the Vance family crest—and a signed confession bearing her uncle's signature.
