Chapter 1 - The Crash on the Marble Floor

"Know your place."
Victoria Sterling spat the words down at Clara Vance like venom, her manicured finger trembling with pure rage as she stood over the emerald green stain of the satin dress pooling on the cold marble.
"Oh my god," Clara’s mother gasped behind them, clutching a half-empty crystal wine glass so tightly her knuckles turned translucent white against the dim, glittering lights of the ballroom.
Clara did not flinch, nor did she cry. She simply pushed herself up from the floor with quiet, calculated grace, her dark brown eyes locking onto Victoria’s dilated, panicked pupils with terrifying calm.
"Mom, come get me," Clara said softly into the screen of her smartphone, her thumb pressing the end-call button before a single alarm could ring.
Victoria’s chest heaved beneath her sparkling gold gown, her arrogant facade cracking into jagged lines of raw terror as the heavy mahogany front doors began to groan open against the winter wind.
"Get out of my house!" Victoria shrieked frantically, clutching her face in absolute disbelief.
"Our company bought your husband's business. Eviction notice, 48 hours," a sharp voice echoed from the foyer.

The guests backed away in stunned silence. Victoria’s entire empire was vanishing before her eyes. But as Clara stepped forward to collect her fallen earrings, she noticed something hidden inside the man's leather briefcase that changed everything.
