Chapter 12 - Face-to-Face with Arthur Pendelton

Arthur Pendelton looked remarkably calm for a man whose global empire had just been financially liquidated and whose murder plot was about to be exposed. He adjusted the cuffs of his expensive charcoal suit, a thin, arrogant smile playing across his weathered lips.
"Well, well, well," Pendelton drawled, tossing the dead detonator carelessly onto a pile of rubble. "Like father, like daughter. Always digging around in places where you don't belong, Clara."
Elizabeth raised her firearm instantly, her eyes locked on Pendelton's chest. "End of the line, Arthur. Drop the remote and turn around."
Pendelton chuckled softly, stepping back into the illuminated archive room to reveal two heavily armed private mercenaries standing behind him with assault rifles trained directly on them. "You really think a gun is going to save you here, Elizabeth? This entire sub-basement is rigged with high-yield thermite charges. One twitch of my finger, and this entire vault—along with you, your daughter, and every piece of incriminating evidence—becomes history."
Clara stepped out from behind her mother, her face an unreadable mask of absolute calm. She didn't look at the mercenaries, nor did she look at the thermite charges glowing red along the concrete pillars. Her dark eyes remained locked entirely on Pendelton's face.
"You murdered my father twelve years ago for a handful of patents and a corporate title," Clara said, her voice echoing steadily off the concrete walls without a single tremor of fear. "And you thought you could play God with our family for the rest of your life."
"Business is war, my dear," Pendelton replied smoothly, stepping closer to the doorway. "Your father was weak. He cared about ethics, sustainability, and people. I simply accelerated natural selection."
"Natural selection didn't destroy my father, Arthur," Clara said, lifting her encrypted mobile terminal to display a live-streaming holographic feed that was broadcasting every single word of his confession directly to a secure server at the Department of Justice and every major news network in North America. "You did. And the whole world just heard you admit it."
Pendelton's arrogant smile vanished instantly. His eyes darted to Clara's screen, reading the active broadcast indicator with mounting horror. "You... you've been streaming this since we entered the tunnel."
"From the moment we hit the docks," Clara replied coldly. "Federal marshals are already securing the surface exits, Arthur. You have nowhere left to run."

Pendelton's face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated rage. He lunged toward the detonator switch on the control console—just as a deafening crash echoed from the steel maintenance hatch behind them.
