Chapter 6 - The Empty Vault and the Inside Threat

"Mom, look at this," Clara whispered, holding her phone out so the screen glowed in the dark leather interior of the town car.

Elizabeth leaned over, her sharp eyes scanning the flashing digits of the transaction log. The balance of Clara's private seed fund—amounting to forty million dollars earmarked for the green technology startup—had vanished in a single wire transfer processed exactly three minutes ago.

"Authorized by biometric override," Elizabeth read aloud, her voice eerily calm despite the massive financial catastrophe. "Clara, that requires your personal retina scan and your physical hardware key."

"Which is locked inside my apartment safe," Clara replied, her heart pounding against her ribs as she raced through every possible security breach. "Unless..."

"Unless someone had direct access to your town house while you were at the gala," Elizabeth finished for her, pulling out her own secure satellite phone to dial head of security Marcus Vance. "Marcus, lock down the Madison Avenue residence immediately. Do not let anyone in or out."

The phone crackled with static before Marcus's urgent voice broke through. "Mrs. Vance, we have a major problem at the penthouse. The private elevator was accessed using master credentials issued directly under your daughter's corporate profile. Someone just cleaned out the physical safety deposit box in the master study."

Clara closed her eyes for a brief second, feeling the cold weight of betrayal settle over her chest. "Who was on the lobby security cameras, Marcus?"

"That's the terrifying part, Miss Clara," Marcus replied hesitantly. "The cameras were looped using a high-definition playback feed twenty minutes before the gala even started. The digital signature on the override belongs to someone we trust implicitly—your chief technology officer, Julian Vance."

"Julian?" Clara gasped, her voice catching in her throat. Julian was not just an employee; he had been her closest confidant, her university lab partner, and the man she had trusted with every line of proprietary code her company had ever written.

"He's gone, Clara," Marcus confirmed. "His private jet cleared customs for the Cayman Islands at eleven-fifteen tonight."

Elizabeth stared straight ahead through the tinted glass as the town car sped through the empty Manhattan streets. "It's not just a corporate takeover anymore, darling. It's a total annihilation campaign. They aren't just trying to bankrupt our company; they are trying to strip us of every single patent, every penny, and every legal defense before dawn."

Clara gripped her phone until her fingers ached. The betrayal by Julian hurt infinitely more than Victoria's petty cruelty in the ballroom. "If Julian has the master encryption keys, he can unlock our primary server vault in Geneva by morning. Once he accesses the core code, our entire green-energy infrastructure belongs to Pendelton."

"Not if we get to the physical backup server first," Elizabeth said firmly, tapping on the glass partition to instruct the driver to change course toward the old downtown research laboratory. "Julian made one fatal mistake. He forgot about the offline analog terminal your father installed before he passed away."

The town car drifted sharply around a wet corner, accelerating into the industrial district. But as they pulled up to the rusted security gates of the old warehouse, they saw something that made the blood run cold in their veins: the security lights were completely dark, and the front door hung off its hinges.
