Chapter 2 - The Hidden Clause in the Corporate Takeover

"You cannot do this," Victoria hissed, stepping aggressively toward the lead attorney while her husband, Richard Sterling, remained conspicuously absent from the party. "My husband's signature requires my notarized consent. This house is legally protected!"
Attorney David Vance adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, his expression entirely devoid of pity. "Mrs. Sterling, your husband signed the asset transfer waiver at four o'clock this afternoon, specifically invoking emergency liquidation clauses due to severe corporate insolvency."
Clara stood quietly beside the marble pillar, smoothing down the emerald satin of her dress without making a sound. The blue-suited team ignored Victoria's rising hysteria completely, marching past her to tack a bright red legal notice directly onto the double doors of the drawing-room.
"This is a mistake, a brutal conspiracy!" Victoria cried out, looking wildly around the room for sympathetic faces among her wealthy friends, only to find them slowly retreating toward the exit.
Clara's mother, Elizabeth, stepped forward, her expression cool and collected. "It’s not a conspiracy, Victoria. It’s simply basic business. You threw my daughter onto the floor because you thought she was nobody. But you forgot who actually owns the land beneath your feet."
Victoria froze, her jaw dropping as she stared at Elizabeth. "What are you talking about?"
David Vance opened a secondary folder, pulling out an original deed dating back twelve years. "The Vance Global Trust holds the primary mortgage on this entire estate, Mrs. Sterling. Richard Sterling defaulted on his interest payments three months ago. Clara didn't just call her mother tonight; she called the board meeting that accelerated your default."
Victoria staggered backward, her gold gown catching on the edge of a bronze side table. "Clara... you orchestrated this?"
Clara tilted her head, a cold smile touching her lips. "You wanted me to know my place, Victoria. My place happens to be at the head of the boardroom table."

Before Victoria could lunge forward again, David Vance’s phone began to vibrate violently in his coat pocket, and the lawyer's face turned pale as he listened to the caller.
