Chapter 9 - Sirens and Silence

The school alarm didn't ring with its usual polite, intermittent chime; it wailed in a continuous, ear-splitting shriek that shook the dust from the ceiling rafters. Red emergency strobe lights flashed to life in the ventilation ducts, casting bloody shadows across the piles of children's clothing.

"They're evacuating the building," Marcus said, pulling himself up to his feet. "Or they're locking down the exits."

Suddenly, the heavy deadbolt on the sub-basement door groaned. The iron bolt slid back with a loud metallic snap, and the door swung open.

Standing in the doorway was not Ms. Gable, but Principal Harrison. His usually immaculate grey suit was torn at the shoulder, and his face was slick with sweat. In his hand, he held a heavy brass fire extinguisher, not a wooden ruler.

"Boys," Harrison panted, his eyes wild with panic. "Get out of here now. The broadcast triggered the security protocol. The entire district network is shutting down."

Marcus didn't move. He stood his ground a few feet away from the open door, his fists clenched in his denim overalls. "Where is my mother, Principal Harrison? Where is everyone whose clothes are in this room?"

Harrison looked down at the piles of jackets and sweaters lining the walls, and a look of profound, crushing defeat washed over his features. He let the fire extinguisher slip from his grip; it hit the concrete floor with a heavy thud.

"We thought we were saving the town," Harrison whispered, his voice cracking. "After the great fire thirty years ago, the founders made a bargain with the district board. We trade the memories of the restless children for stability, funding, and protection from the outside world. Your mother tried to dismantle the core last night."

"And you put her in the clock tower," Marcus said, his voice terrifyingly calm.

"She chose it," Harrison replied, stepping aside to clear the exit. "To save your brother. He's on the three-fifteen bus heading out of the valley right now. If you want to see him, you have to run before Ms. Gable resets the master switch."
