Chapter 15 - The Open Road

The morning air smelled of wet pine and distant rain, completely free of chalk dust and ozone. Marcus, Leo, and Toby stood at the edge of the newly opened valley boundary line, watching the morning mist roll away from the hills. Behind them, the school building looked smaller, almost ordinary, its windows dark and quiet.

Principal Harrison and Ms. Gable were nowhere to be found. The administrative wing doors were chained shut from the outside, and the town ledger was gone, burned to ash in the courtyard fire pit before dawn.

"Where are we going?" Toby asked, adjusting his new backpack and looking up at his older brother.

Marcus reached down and took Toby's small hand in his own. For the first time in his life, his fingers weren't clenched into a defensive fist. They were open, steady, and warm.

"We're going to the city," Marcus said, looking down the long, winding road that stretched out beyond the valley. "All the way to the end of the line."

Leo slung his black hoodie over his shoulder and grinned, kicking a loose pebble across the asphalt. "My dad's going to meet us at the first highway diner. He sent a message on the emergency radio before it died."

Marcus took one last look back at the silent schoolyard. Room 4B was empty. The wooden ruler was gone. The classroom was just a room now, holding nothing more dangerous than memories waiting to be made.

He turned his back on the clock tower, stepping across the old stone threshold and onto the open highway. The wind at his back felt light and clean, carrying no instructions, no warnings, and no rules—only the steady, unbroken rhythm of their own footsteps moving forward into the morning sun.
