Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Hallway

The heavy oak door of Room 4B clicked shut, sealing Marcus inside with the echoes of Ms. Gable’s footsteps fading down the linoleum corridor. Detention was supposed to be a punishment for clumsiness, but to Marcus, it felt like an eternity locked inside a vault of secrets. Across the room, Leo remained seated at his desk, refusing to pack his black hoodie into his backpack. The classroom lights flickered once, plunging the chalkboard into a deep, bruised gray.

"You shouldn't have spoken up," Marcus whispered, wiping his nose with the back of his denim sleeve. "She watches everyone who talks to me."

Leo slid out of his chair, his sneakers making no sound against the tile. He walked over and placed a small, crumpled piece of notebook paper on Marcus’s desk. "My dad works at the municipal water plant," Leo said softly, keeping his eyes fixed on the door. "He told me the water tastes different after the three o'clock bell rings. He said nobody in town is allowed to drink from the taps downtown anymore."

Marcus unfolded the paper with trembling fingers. Inside was a rough sketch of the school basement, a place the students were strictly forbidden to enter. A series of X marks mapped out a path beneath the floorboards of the gymnasium. "The basement doesn't exist on the school blueprints," Marcus breathed, his heart pounding against his ribs. "Principal Harrison told the assembly last year that the lower level was permanently sealed due to flooding."

"It's not flooded," Leo whispered, stepping closer. "My dad found a key in his office locker with the school crest on it. He left it on our kitchen table this morning before he disappeared."

Marcus looked up, horror gripping his chest. "Disappeared? Your dad didn't go to work?"

May you like

"No," Leo said, his voice dropping to a harsh rasp. "And when I checked his closet, his mustard-colored jacket was gone. The exact same shade as Ms. Gable's blouse."
