Chapter 13 - Inside the Mechanism

The interior of the clock tower smelled of hot grease, ozone, and ancient dust. The walls were lined not with bricks, but with thousands of ticking pocket watches, each one glowing with a faint, pulsing blue light that represented the stolen memories of a child from the district.

Marcus climbed the spiraling iron staircase, his boots ringing out in the enclosed space. Above him, the massive brass gears ground against each other with a deafening, rhythmic roar. In the center of the upper chamber hung the central pendulum—a heavy iron weight shaped like a child's clenched fist.

At the base of the pendulum sat an empty brass chair, wired directly into the copper cables that snaked down from the school roof.

"Sit down," a voice echoed through the gears. It wasn't Principal Harrison, and it wasn't Ms. Gable. It was the collective hum of the town's hidden architecture speaking directly into his skull.

Marcus walked to the chair and sat down. The metal armrests immediately clamped around his wrists with cold, unyielding precision. Fine wires extended from the headrest, pressing gently against his temples.

Down below, through the narrow arched window of the tower, Marcus could see Leo standing by the school fence, banging his fists against the air in silent grief. Beside him, Toby was finally free of the barrier, running toward the open road.

"Memory upload initiated," a synthetic voice announced inside his mind.

Images began to flash behind Marcus's eyes at blinding speed: his first day of school, the smell of his mother's kitchen, the exact feel of the wooden ruler tapping against the desk, the face of his brother laughing in the sunlight. One by one, the gears pulled the memories away, storing them inside the ticking pocket watches along the wall.

Marcus closed his eyes, fighting to hold onto just one thought. Just one single image that the machine couldn't reach.
