Chapter 12 - The Choice at the Threshold

The red light on Principal Harrison’s remote control pulsed in time with the distant, heavy ticking of the clock tower. Around them, the students from Room 4B stood frozen on the bus loading platform like statues carved from salt, their eyes blank and unblinking.

"Don't do it, Marcus," Leo warned, grabbing the sleeve of Marcus's denim overalls. "If you go in there, the machine takes everything. You won't even remember your own name by tomorrow morning."

Marcus looked from Leo to his younger brother Toby, who was trapped behind the shimmering barrier of the district grid, mouthing silent pleas for help. Then his gaze drifted to his mother, Sarah, standing rigidly by the tower steps, turning the brass key against her wrist with mechanical perfection.

"If I don't go," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a quiet, resolute calm, "Toby stays on that bus forever. And Ms. Gable finds a new classroom tomorrow."

"There has to be another way," Leo argued, his eyes filling with desperate tears. "We broke the system once with the cassette recorder. We can find the main power breaker outside the fence and short-circuit the whole valley!"

"There is no outside anymore, Leo," Principal Harrison said, stepping closer while keeping the remote control aimed squarely at the tower cable. "The valley was sealed the day the first bell rang. Every road out leads right back to this parking lot. Walk toward the tower, boy. The mechanism is waiting."

Marcus took a deep breath, the scent of chalk dust and autumn leaves filling his lungs for what he knew might be the very last time. He looked down at his own hands, clean and unbroken.

"Take care of Toby," Marcus told Leo, stepping away from his friend.

"Marcus, wait!" Leo cried, lunging forward.

Before Leo could grab him, Marcus crossed the threshold of the invisible barrier. The static shock flared, but instead of pushing him back, the grid recognized his DNA signature as a valid input. The barrier parted like water.
