Chapter 4 - The Gym Stage Secret

The gymnasium smelled of old rubber mats, floor wax, and something metallic, like overheated electrical wiring. Marcus and Leo pressed their backs against the wooden bleachers, watching the heavy velvet curtains that hung over the raised stage. The school was quiet, save for the distant, rhythmic pounding of a basketball in the outdoor yard.
"The access panel is right behind the piano," Leo whispered, gesturing with a dirt-smudged hand.
They crept across the polished floor, their footsteps echoing slightly despite their caution. Marcus reached out and pushed against the heavy upright piano. It rolled on its brass casters with a faint groan, revealing a narrow wooden door set low into the wall, painted the exact same dull green as the corridor baseboards.
"Give me the key," Marcus said, holding out his hand.
Leo handed over the rusted iron key. It felt heavy and cold, like a piece of winter ice. Marcus slid it into the vertical keyhole. It turned with a satisfying, muffled click that made both boys freeze in place. For three agonizing seconds, they waited for the hallway loudspeaker to crackle to life with Ms. Gable’s voice.
Nothing happened.
Marcus pulled the door open. A rush of damp, freezing air billowed out from the dark void beyond, carrying a strange, sweet scent—like old paper and crushed cedar leaves. Inside, a set of concrete steps descended into absolute darkness.
"Hold onto my shoulder," Leo said, stepping over the threshold first.
They descended step by step, the wooden door swinging shut behind them with a heavy, final thud. The darkness swallowed the pale light of the gym until they could only feel the rough concrete wall guiding their way. After twenty steps, Marcus’s foot hit something flat. He reached down and felt a pile of discarded clothing scattered across the floor.

He lifted a piece of fabric into his hand, feeling the familiar texture of denim. "Leo," Marcus whispered, his voice trembling uncontrollably. "This is my brother's jacket. The one he was wearing the day he disappeared from the playground."
