Chapter 3 - The Missing Ledger

The morning sun filtered through the dusty windows of the school library, casting long, fractured shadows across rows of outdated encyclopedias. Marcus kept his head down, pretending to read a geography textbook while his eyes darted toward the circulation desk. Librarian Mrs. Higgins was fast asleep, her head resting on a stack of overdue notices. Leo slipped through the stacks, holding the rusted iron key he had stolen from his kitchen table.

"It fits," Leo whispered, sliding onto the wooden chair beside Marcus. "I tested it on the janitor's supply closet door during recess. It opened the inner panel. The one that leads down."

Marcus closed his textbook with a soft thud. "We can't go down there during school hours. Ms. Gable takes attendance every thirty minutes. If she notices we're gone, the sirens will start."

"She's not in her classroom right now," Leo countered, tapping the cover of the geography book. "I saw her walking toward the administrative wing with the principal. They were carrying the wooden ledger from your desk, Marcus. The one you dropped yesterday."

A cold sweat broke out across Marcus’s forehead. "My mother wrote notes in the margins of that ledger before she left town. If they read those notes, they'll know she figured out why the clock tower stops every evening at dusk."

"Then we need to find the ledger before they burn it," Leo insisted, grabbing Marcus by the sleeve of his white collared shirt. "There's a chute behind the gymnasium stage. It drops straight down into the sub-basement. My dad said that's where they store the old student records from twenty years ago—back when the town had a different name."

Marcus hesitated, staring at the classroom pass resting on the librarian's desk. Every instinct told him to stay in the light, to follow the rules, to keep his head down and survive. But the image of his mother’s face flashed in his mind, fading away like a photograph left too long in the sun.

"Okay," Marcus whispered, his voice steadying. "Let's go."
