Chapter 8 - The Voice in the Wire

Marcus grabbed Leo’s arm, pulling him back flat against the floor as the creature in the ventilation shaft shifted its weight. A low, mechanical clicking sound—identical to the ticking of the grand clock in the school lobby—echoed from the overhead grate.

"What is that?" Leo whispered, his teeth chattering from the damp chill and sheer terror.

"It's not an animal," Marcus breathed, his eyes locked on the glowing eyes. "It's one of the watchers. My brother talked about them before he vanished. He called them the gear-keepers."

The grate slowly slid open with a screech of rusted screws. A long, metal-plated arm reached down into the room, its fingers ending in thin, precise instruments like clockmaker's tweezers. The appendage swept blindly across the top of the lockers, searching for movement.

"We need to connect the wire now," Marcus whispered urgently. He grabbed the thin copper cable dangling from the side of the cassette recorder and shoved it into the open junction box beside locker twelve.

Sparks flew with a sharp hiss, illuminating the small room in a blinding flash of blue light. The cassette recorder sputtered, coughed, and then began playing at maximum volume.

Instead of Marcus’s young voice, a sharp, clear adult woman's voice filled the sub-basement, echoing up through the ventilation shafts and into every hallway of the school.

“This is Sarah King. If you are hearing this broadcast, the district council has breached the sub-basement. The clock tower is not keeping time—it is draining the memories of every child in this town to power the district's surveillance grid. Do not trust the teachers. Do not stand still.”

The mechanical arm in the ventilation shaft froze mid-movement. A high-pitched screech of electronic feedback echoed from the ceiling, followed by the sound of glass shattering somewhere on the floor above.

"It worked," Leo whispered, his eyes wide with disbelief. "The whole school just heard your mother's warning."
