Chapter 11 - The Clock Tower's Shadow

The minute hand of the great stone clock tower locked into place with a sickening thud that vibrated through the asphalt of the parking lot. Toby stumbled backward, dropping his backpack as the yellow school bus suddenly cut its engine, plunging into absolute silence.

"Marcus!" Toby cried out, reaching out his small hand. But as he stepped forward, an invisible barrier seemed to ripple across the air between them, pushing him back toward the bus steps.

Marcus hit the invisible wall with his hands, feeling a static shock that stung his palms. "Leo! What is happening? The air feels like stone!"

Leo skidded to a halt beside him, pressing his palms against the shimmering distortion in space. "It's the district grid," Leo yelled over a rising, high-pitched whine coming from the clock tower's apex. "The broadcast from the basement didn't destroy the system; it just forced it into emergency lockdown mode!"

From the roof of the school, a heavy metallic cable unspooled, whipping through the air like a striking serpent. It anchored itself directly into the top of the clock tower, connecting the school building to the massive gear mechanism inside the monument.

In the center of the town square, the heavy oak doors of the clock tower slowly creaked open. Stepping out into the pale sunlight was not a machine, and not a teacher. It was a woman wearing a faded denim jacket, her hair silvered at the temples, walking with a stiff, mechanical precision.

"Mom?" Marcus whispered, his voice trembling so hard he could barely form the syllables.

Sarah King stopped at the bottom of the tower steps. Her eyes were wide and unfocused, fixed on a point far beyond the horizon. In her hand, she held the brass winding key, turning it slowly clockwise against her own wrist as if rewinding a broken spring.

"She's not awake yet," a cold voice spoke from behind them.

Marcus and Leo whipped around. Principal Harrison stood by the edge of the bus loop, holding a small black remote control with a single flashing red button.

"If you want your mother back, Marcus," Harrison said, his face drained of all color, "you have to take her place in the tower before the second hand hits twelve."
