Chapter 5 - The Ledger of Sins

The pages inside the manila envelope felt heavy, coarse, and stained with the passage of time. Victoria pulled them out under the weak beam of her desk lamp, her eyes scanning the police reports, coroner notes, and internal corporate memos stamped with the classified seal of Vance Global Holdings. The date printed on the primary report was twenty years ago—the exact week her father had suddenly expanded the boutique into this flagship luxury location, the very moment their family fortune skyrocketed from modest tailors to undeniable retail royalty.

"Read the financial ledger attached to the back," Arthur instructed softly, standing motionless by the window as he watched the rain begin to streak against the glass. "That's where the real truth lies. The flagship store isn't just a retail space, Victoria. It was built directly over the demolished offices of my brother's original firm—the firm Maya's father owned before he and his wife were pushed out of the corporate picture permanently."

Victoria’s breath hitched as her eyes landed on the final page—a transfer of shares signed under duress, bearing her father’s signature alongside a signature that matched the delicate, precise handwriting of the girl who had been sitting on her marble floor hours earlier. Maya wasn't just an heir to the corporate board; she was the rightful sole owner of every square inch of the building Victoria ruled as queen.

"Why didn't she go to the police?" Victoria whispered, the paper shaking in her hands as the terrifying magnitude of the situation settled deep into her bones. "With these documents, she could have had us all arrested, thrown in prison for decades. Why play this elaborate game in the lobby?"

"Because prison is too merciful for people like us," a cool voice echoed from the doorway.

Victoria gasped, dropping the papers as Maya stepped out of the shadows of the hallway, her bare feet silent against the parquet floor. She wore the same simple cotton dress, but her eyes held an ancient, crushing weight that made Victoria feel microscopic. Marcus stood silently behind her, blocking the only exit from the room.

"My father believed in the law," Maya said, walking slowly toward the desk until she stood directly opposite Victoria. "He believed that corrupt institutions could eventually be reformed from the inside through patience and truth. But my mother knew better. She knew that people who worship money will only understand the pain of losing it."

Victoria stood up abruptly, her chair scraping loudly against the floor. "You planned this. From the very beginning, you let me build this empire just so you could tear it down on the anniversary of your parents' exile."

"I didn't tear it down, Victoria," Maya replied softly, leaning her hands gently on the edge of the desk. "I simply stopped pretending it was yours."

Before Victoria could form a reply, the heavy oak door burst open a second time, and three uniformed federal marshals strode into the office, flanked by corporate auditors carrying digital evidence boxes. The lead officer stepped forward, pulling a pair of cold steel handcuffs from his belt and locking his steady gaze directly onto the paralyzed boutique owner.

"Victoria Vance, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, asset concealment, and obstruction of justice," the marshal announced, his voice echoing sharply through the room. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

May you like

Victoria stood frozen as the cold metal cuffs clicked sharply around her wrists, her entire world collapsing inward as she realized her nightmare had only just begun.
