Chapter 13 - The Override Key

The white mist of nitrogen gas thickened inside the subterranean vault, swirling around the concrete pillars and reducing visibility to a hazy blur. Arthur slumped against the stainless-steel table, his breathing shallow and labored as the lack of oxygen began to take its toll. Marcus continued his relentless assault on the hydraulic seals of the blast door, his broad shoulders slamming against the unyielding metal with brute force, though the reinforced locks refused to budge.

Maya stood unflinching before the central server terminal. The red emergency glow illuminated her face, casting sharp, dramatic shadows across her features. She raised the heavy matte-black titanium key card—the very key Arthur's brother had commissioned decades ago—and slotted it directly into the magistrate's master port beneath the monitor.

On the screen, Julian’s smug smile instantly vanished, replaced by a frantic stream of warning errors flashing in bright crimson text: [ACCESS DENIED: ROOT OVERRIDE DETECTED]

"What did you do?!" Julian’s voice screamed through the intercom speakers, the previous composure completely shattered, replaced by raw panic. "That key shouldn't work! I purged the master registry years ago!"

"You purged the public registries, Julian, but you never checked the physical hardware roots," Maya said, her voice steady and commanding as her fingers danced across the physical backup terminal keys. "My father anticipated your cowardice. Every shell corporation you built, every offshore account you drained, was hardwired into this exact terminal under a dead-man's switch."

[PROCESSING DELETION OF OFFSHORE ASSETS... 50%... 80%... 100%]

A loud mechanical beep echoed through the facility. Suddenly, the hissing sound of nitrogen gas stopped instantly, replaced by the loud whirring of ventilation fans sucking the heavy mist out of the room. The red emergency lights flickered, shifted, and turned back to a calm, steady white. With a heavy, echoing groan, the massive steel blast door at the top of the staircase unlocked itself, sliding smoothly back into the concrete wall.

Fresh, cool air rushed down into the vault, and Arthur drew in a deep, grateful breath, coughing as he pushed himself up from the floor. Marcus stood guard at the open doorway, his weapon drawn, watching the empty corridor above for any sign of Julian's operatives.

On the monitor screen, Julian’s face distorted into a blur of static before the feed went completely black, cutting off his frantic shouting.

Maya pulled the titanium key card from the port, slipping it back into her pocket. She turned around, looking at her uncle and her bodyguard with a look of absolute, unshakeable resolve.

"The assets are frozen," Maya said quietly. "Now, we go collect our cousin."
