Chapter 3 - The Cold Audit

The heavy oak doors of the VIP back office swung open with a dull thud, shattering the heavy silence that had settled over the boutique floor. Victoria marched inside, her heels clicking aggressively against the parquet wood, though her hands trembled slightly as she tried to unlock her private terminal. Maya followed at a measured pace, her bare feet making no sound at all, accompanied by Marcus, who stationed himself squarely in front of the door like an impassable granite wall.

"You have twenty-four hours to vacate the premises for an emergency operational review," Victoria blurted out, refusing to turn around, desperately hiding her shaking fingers from the young girl. She clicked furiously through software menus, trying to pull up inventory logs to prove her absolute dominance. "I built this brand from the ground up. My name is on the marquee, not yours. Whatever fake identification card you flashed downstairs means nothing against my decades of hard work."

Maya didn't sit down in the plush leather armchair behind the desk. Instead, she walked over to the mahogany bookshelf, running her small hand along the spines of bound quarterly reports, each representing millions of dollars in luxury retail revenue.

"Hard work, Victoria?" Maya asked quietly, pulling a thick binder from the shelf and letting it drop onto the center of the mahogany desk with a heavy thud. "Is that what you call forging signatures on inventory import tax exemptions, or is that just your personal definition of high-end entrepreneurship?"

Victoria spun around, her face pale, the red lipstick stark against her chalk-white skin. "That is an outrageous accusation! You are a child playing a dangerous game orchestrated by my corporate rivals. I will have your entire lineage blacklisted from this city before the sun sets."

"My lineage built this city, Victoria," Maya replied, her voice dropping an octave, carrying the unmistakable weight of generational command. She opened the binder to a flagged page covered in red ink. "My grandfather gave your father the initial seed capital to open a failing tailor shop forty years ago. When your father passed, my family absorbed your mounting debts, kept your accounts afloat, and allowed you to play queen bee in a gilded cage, hoping you would eventually learn humility. Instead, you developed a malignant cruelty that preys on anyone you deem beneath your arbitrary standards."

Victoria gripped the edge of the desk, her knuckles turning white. "Lies. All of it. The Vance name stands for absolute excellence."

"The Vance name stands for whatever my family permits it to stand for," Maya corrected calmly, sliding a single printed sheet across the polished wood toward the trembling woman. "And as of three minutes ago, our legal department has revoked your operating license, frozen your personal assets, and initiated a forensic audit into every single transaction processed through this flagship location over the past five years."

Victoria stared down at the document, her eyes scanning the official seals and signatures of the city's highest-ranking magistrates. The reality of her impending ruin settled over her like a freezing wave, stripping away her armor piece by piece.

"You can't do this," Victoria whispered, her voice finally breaking. "I have obligations. I have a reputation to maintain among the elite."

May you like

"Reputations are earned through character, Victoria," Maya said, turning toward the door as Marcus pulled it open. "And yours just expired."
