Chapter 10 - The Magistrate's Fall

Magistrate Robert Thorne’s face drained of all color, the arrogant authority he usually projected evaporating into a puddle of sheer panic. He gripped his gold pocket watch so tightly his knuckles turned white, his eyes darting frantically toward the door, only to find Marcus blocking the exit like an immovable wall of steel.

"You..." Thorne stammered, his voice cracking as he pointed a trembling finger at Maya. "You're just a child. How did you get in here? This is a restricted government facility."

"This government facility sits on land leased by my family's trust since before you were born, Magistrate," Maya replied, taking a slow, measured step forward. Her voice was calm, devoid of anger, yet it carried an oppressive weight that forced the grown men to step back. "And those ledgers you're feeding into the shredder? They contain the exact paper trail proving you accepted bribes to falsify my parents' death certificates twenty years ago."

Thorne swallowed hard, forcing a desperate, fake smile onto his face as he tried to regain his composure. "You have no proof. These are baseless accusations fabricated by a disgruntled family member seeking attention. My office holds absolute immunity under municipal law."

"Immunity doesn't apply to acts of treason and premeditated murder, Robert," a deep, weathered voice echoed from the dark corridor behind Maya.

Arthur Vance stepped into the vault's harsh fluorescent light, holding a heavy steel briefcase stamped with federal prosecutor seals. He tossed the case onto the stainless-steel examination table, where it popped open to reveal dozens of original signed checks, bank wire transfer receipts, and audio transcripts linking Thorne directly to the offshore accounts used to finance the boutique's expansion.

Thorne stared at the open briefcase, his knees buckling slightly as the undeniable reality of his impending destruction crashed down upon him. "You... you recorded everything."

"My brother wasn't as naive as you and Victoria liked to believe," Arthur said, stepping up beside Maya and looking down at the disgraced magistrate with deep disappointment. "He knew the system was corrupt, so he built insurance into the foundation of every contract our family ever signed."

Before Thorne could lunge toward the desk to grab his discarded phone, Marcus moved with blinding speed. In a single fluid motion, the bodyguard grabbed Thorne by the collar, slamming him face-first against the concrete wall and pinning him securely before clicking a pair of heavy tactical zip-ties around his wrists.

"Federal agents are waiting upstairs, Magistrate," Marcus said coldly, shoving Thorne toward the exit. "Your reign is over."

As the guards dragged the screaming magistrate out of the vault, Maya walked over to the shivering tech operatives who stood paralyzed beside the shredder. She reached out, plucked an untouched leather-bound ledger from the machine's hopper, and opened it to a heavily bookmarked page.

Her eyes widened in shock as she read the name handwritten at the very bottom of the asset transfer list—a name that changed the entire scope of her mission.
