Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Dark

The glowing neon lights of the city skyline cast long, distorted shadows across the empty boutique floor. The doors had been locked hours ago, chasing away the wealthy patrons and panicked staff, leaving only the hollow echo of footsteps bouncing off the marble pillars. Victoria sat alone at her desk in the dark office, refusing to turn on the overhead lamps, staring blankly at the glowing screen of her personal terminal as notification after notification flashed red, signaling the systematic dismantling of her financial life.

Her phone buzzed violently against the wood, vibrating itself across the desk until it fell to the floor. She didn't pick it up. She knew who was calling—investors demanding explanations, suppliers canceling contracts, and creditors circling like vultures sensing a dying animal. The empire she had spent her entire adult life constructing had evaporated in less than a single afternoon, brought down not by a hostile corporate takeover or a market crash, but by a barefoot girl in a cotton dress.

A soft tap at the open office door made Victoria flinch. She turned her head slowly, her eyes bloodshot and hollow, expecting to see Marcus or another legal representative of Vance Global. Instead, a familiar silhouette stood in the doorway—Arthur Vance, her estranged uncle and the man she hadn't spoken to in over a decade, stepped into the dim light.

"You always were too arrogant for your own good, Victoria," Arthur said quietly, his voice carrying a tired, mournful tone as he looked at the wreckage of his niece's career. "I warned your father that sending you to boarding schools abroad would teach you to look down on everyone who didn't fit your narrow definition of perfection."

"Shut up, Arthur," Victoria spat, though her voice lacked its former fire, sounding more like a frightened child cornered in the dark. "You abandoned this family years ago to hide in the countryside. You have no right to lecture me about business or pride."

"I walked away because I saw what this family does to people," Arthur replied, stepping further into the room and placing a weathered leather briefcase on the corner of the desk. "We confuse wealth with worth, and power with virtue. Maya is trying to teach you a lesson that my generation failed to instill in you."

Victoria scoffed, crossing her arms tightly over her blazer. "A lesson? She humiliated me in front of my staff and my clients. She stripped me of everything I built."

"She stripped you of the illusion that you are untouchable," Arthur corrected sharply, leaning down to meet her gaze in the dim light. "And she left you with a choice. You can either spend the rest of your life fighting a war you've already lost, or you can find out why she chose today to finally drop the hammer."

Victoria stared at her uncle, a cold knot forming in her stomach. "What do you mean? Why today?"

Arthur reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a faded manila envelope, sliding it across the desk toward her. "Open it. It's the file on the accident that took Maya's parents twenty years ago—the very accident your father covered up to secure our family's initial monopoly."

Victoria’s hand hovered over the envelope, her fingers trembling as the dark secrets of her family's foundation began to unravel before her eyes.
