Chapter 9 - The Edge of the Ravine

The wind howled across the open concrete pad, carrying the sharp scent of jet fuel and damp earth. Julian stood frozen twenty feet away, every muscle in his body coiled like spring steel. His dark eyes locked onto his wife’s trembling hands, where the edge of the bright yellow blanket hung precariously over the yawning drop of the ravine. The newborn’s sharp, distressed cries cut through the deafening roar of the idling helicopter blades, a haunting sound that made Julian’s chest tighten with a suffocating ache.
"Think about what you're doing, Helena," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm, though a single bead of sweat traced a path down his trimmed beard. "That is your flesh and blood. Drop the child, and there is no plea deal. There is no escape. You will spend every remaining breath of your life in a maximum-security psychiatric ward."
Helena’s chest heaved under the billowing white silk of her robe. Her dark hair whipped across her face, sticking to her tear-streaked cheeks. She looked down at the dizzying drop beneath her feet, then back at Julian, her expression fractured by sheer, unadulterated panic.
"You did this to me!" Helena shrieked over the whine of the turbines. "You set the trap! You watched me walk right into it while you played the gentle groom with your stupid white rose! You ruined my life, Julian!"
"You ruined your own life the moment you decided to embezzle from the logistics accounts and sell our proprietary data to our corporate rivals," Julian replied, his tone remaining an unyielding wall of logic and steel. "I simply refused to let you drag our family down into the ash with you."
Slowly, deliberately, Julian slid his left hand into his pocket, keeping his right hand visible and open. His fingers grazed the surface of the override transmitter, but he didn't press the kill-switch yet. One wrong twitch from Helena could send the baby over the edge. He needed a distraction, a microscopic lapse in her concentration.
From the treeline behind Julian, a low rumble vibrated through the ground. Two black-and-white state police SUVs broke through the brush, their sirens muted but their emergency lights flashing a blinding rhythm of red and blue against the grey morning sky. Federal agents poured out of the vehicles, weapons drawn, spreading out in a tactical semi-circle around the helipad.
"Helena Vance! Drop the child and put your hands on your head! Federal agents!" a voice amplified by a loudspeaker boomed across the tarmac.
Helena flinched violently at the sound of the megaphone, her grip on the yellow blanket slipping an inch. The baby let out a piercing wail.
"Stay back!" Helena screamed, hitching the baby back up against her chest for a split second, her balance wavering on the wet concrete.

Julian seized that micro-second of hesitation. He lunged forward with explosive speed, closing the twenty-foot gap before Helena could react.
