Chapter 3 - The Men at the Gate

The red tail lights of the unmarked sedan reflected sharply in the tall arched windows of the hallway. Helena pressed her palms against the glass, her breath fogging the pane as she watched the three men in dark suits stride with purpose toward the grand front entrance of the estate. The morning sun was just beginning to break through the heavy clouds, illuminating the manicured hedges and the long gravel drive where hundreds of wedding guests were supposedly parking their luxury cars. But right now, those cars were blocking the gates, trapped by a barricade of state police cruisers.

"What have you done?" Helena whispered, turning back to face her husband with genuine terror in her wide eyes. Her updo was starting to fray, a single dark strand of hair falling across her damp forehead.

Julian remained as steady as the marble pillars supporting the ceiling. He adjusted the white rose boutonniere on his lapel, his fingers steady and practiced. "I simply stopped playing the fool, Helena. For six months, I watched you siphon capital out of the Vance Logistics expansion fund. I watched you whisper into phones while pretending to plan a renewal of our vows. Today was supposed to be our second wedding. Instead, it’s the day your corporate espionage catches up with you."

Helena’s knees buckled slightly, but she caught herself against the wall. "You're bluffing. You love this image too much. You wouldn't let the media see the Vance family name dragged through the mud. The stock would plummet!"

"The stock already recovered an hour ago, because I transferred all voting shares into a blind trust this morning at four a.m.," Julian replied, his voice a calm counterpoint to her rising hysteria. "The media isn't here for a scandal, Helena. They're here for an arrest."

From down the hall, the heavy oak door of the nursery creaked open. Martha stepped out, her face pale. She didn't have the baby with her this time; she had placed the newborn safely in the crib. She walked toward Julian, stopping a few paces away.

"Mr. Vance, the district attorney is on line two," Martha said, holding out a cordless house phone with trembling hands. "He says the warrants have been signed by the federal judge."

Julian took the phone, holding it against his ear without breaking eye contact with his wife. "Put him on speaker, Martha."

Martha pressed a button on the keypad, and the crisp, authoritative voice of the district attorney echoed loudly in the quiet hallway.

"Julian? We have units securing the perimeter now," the D.A. said over the line. "We found the forged transfer documents on Mrs. Vance’s laptop, along with the communication logs linking her to your primary competitor. She’s completely exposed."

Helena lunged forward, trying to grab the phone from Julian’s hand, but he easily sidestepped her, letting her stumble against the Persian rug.

"Get away from me!" Helena shrieked, her voice finally breaking into a sharp, ugly cry of pure desperation.

Julian spoke calmly into the receiver. "Proceed with the arrests. But wait until I come downstairs."

He hung up the phone and looked down at Helena, who was now kneeling on the floor, weeping real, heavy tears.

"You're heartless," Helena sobbed, looking up with venom in her eyes.

May you like

"No," Julian said softly. "I'm a father." He turned and walked toward the stairs. "And I found the flash drive you hid in the baby's diaper bag."
