Chapter 11 - The International Wire

The morning sun finally broke fully through the grey clouds, casting a harsh, unforgiving light over the gravel driveway of the Vance estate. The last of the caterers' vans and guests' luxury cars were clearing out through the front gates, escorted by state troopers who made sure no unauthorized media vehicles could slip past the perimeter. Julian stood near the grand entrance, still wearing his torn black tuxedo and holding the sleeping newborn securely against his chest, while Martha stood close by, keeping a vigilant watch.

Julian pulled his smartphone from his pocket with his free hand, his thumb swiping across the screen to unlock the display. The unknown international number was still flashing on the interface, accompanied by a text message that read: “The Cayman accounts have just been accessed from a secure terminal in Zurich. The transfer cannot be stopped.”

Julian’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. His jaw tightened behind his trimmed beard. He thought he had severed every digital lifeline Helena possessed, yet a secondary protocol had clearly been triggered the moment the federal agents slapped the handcuffs on her wrists.

Martha noticed the sudden change in Julian’s posture. She leaned in slightly, keeping her voice low so as not to disturb the baby. "Mr. Vance? Is something wrong? The police have Mrs. Vance in custody, and the D.A. said the warrants cover all domestic assets."

"Domestic assets, yes," Julian replied, his voice chillingly flat. "But Helena wasn't acting alone, and she wasn't just working with her brother Marcus. Someone else funded her shell companies from overseas—someone with deep enough pockets to bypass our domestic firewall entirely."

Before Martha could respond, a sleek black town car rolled slowly up the private drive, bypassing the police blockade with an alarming level of ease. The tinted rear window lowered smoothly, revealing a sharp-featured man in his late forties wearing an immaculate Italian wool suit, his silver-streaked hair neatly brushed back. It was Victor Vance—Julian’s estranged uncle and the former CEO of Vance International, a man who had been legally barred from the family board ten years prior following a hostile takeover attempt.

The town car came to a smooth halt right in front of the marble steps. Victor didn't step out; he simply rested his arm along the open window frame, offering Julian a cold, knowing smile.

"Julian, my boy," Victor said, his voice smooth and dripping with patronizing warmth. "It looks like you've had quite a dramatic morning. Weddings are always such stressful affairs."

Julian handed the sleeping baby gently over to Martha, whispering, "Take her inside to the nursery. Lock the doors." Martha nodded frantically, whisking the infant away into the mansion without a second hesitation.

Julian turned his full, unyielding attention toward the car, stepping right to the edge of the pavement. "You picked a very poor time to show your face, Uncle Victor," Julian said, his voice dropping into a low, menacing register. "Your offshore terminal in Zurich just triggered a transfer of forty million dollars from Helena’s shell account."

Victor chuckled softly, adjusting his gold-rimmed cufflinks. "Forty million? Consider it a severance package for the family. You see, Julian, Helena was merely testing the locks on a door that I intend to kick completely off its hinges."

Victor nodded toward the front doors of the estate, where two federal agents were suddenly stepping backward out of the foyer, their hands raised as a dozen armed mercenaries in unmarked tactical gear swarmed the portico.
