Chapter 8 - The Helipad Confrontation

The wind whipped across the concrete pad of the private helipad, tearing at the manicured pines that lined the northern ridge of the estate. A sleek, twin-engine AgustaWestland helicopter sat idling on the tarmac, its rotor blades spinning in a furious, ear-splitting blur that flattened the tall grass surrounding the clearing.
Helena stood near the open cabin door of the aircraft, her white silk robe billowing violently in the downdraft. Her dark hair had completely unraveled from its updo, streaming wildly across her face. Cradled tightly against her chest was the yellow blanket containing the newborn baby, who had finally woken up and begun to cry, its faint wails swallowed instantly by the roar of the engines.
Julian stepped out from the tree line, his black tuxedo jacket flapping against his frame, the torn white rose still clinging desperately to his lapel by a single thread. He walked with slow, unyielding purpose across the concrete, ignoring the biting wind and the deafening noise of the turbine.
Helena saw him approaching. Panic distorted her features. She backed away toward the cabin steps, screaming over the deafening chop of the blades.
"Don't come any closer, Julian! I swear to God I'll take her up! You'll never see your daughter again!" Helena shrieked, clutching the baby so tightly the infant let out a sharp, distressed gasp.
Julian stopped twenty feet away. He didn't pull a weapon; he simply pulled the matte-black override transmitter from his pocket and held it up so she could clearly see the glowing red LED light pulsing on its surface.
"The flight computer is locked, Helena," Julian shouted, his voice cutting effortlessly through the wall of sound. "You aren't going anywhere. The gyroscopes are disabled, and the fuel intake valves are shut off from my server."
Helena stared at the transmitter, her eyes wild with disbelief. She looked down at the instrument panel inside the cockpit, where every digital display was flashing a stark, unyielding error message: SYSTEM LOCKED BY ADMIN.
"You're lying!" Helena screamed, tears streaming down her face, mixing with the dust kicked up by the rotors. "You wouldn't strand your own child out here in the cold!"
"I'm not stranding my child," Julian replied, taking another measured step forward. "I'm rescuing her from a thief who is about to spend the rest of her natural life behind bars."
Helena looked desperately back at the cockpit, then down at the baby in her arms. Realizing her escape route was entirely severed, a dark, dangerous shift occurred in her expression. She loosened her grip on the yellow blanket just enough to let the baby dangle precariously over the open edge of the concrete helipad, where a hundred-foot drop fell away into the rocky ravine below.
"Take one more step, Julian, and I swear I'll let her drop," Helena whispered, her voice trembling with absolute madness.

Julian froze instantly, his breath catching in his throat as the blood drained from his face.
