Chapter 6 - The Breach in the Foyer

The shockwave of the blast rattled the crystal teardrops of the chandelier in the East Salon, sending a sharp, resonant chime through the air. Guests shrieked, diving beneath gilt-edged chairs and shielding their faces from imagined falling glass. Julian didn't look back at the panic behind him; his eyes remained locked on Marcus, whose manic grin widened as the sound of heavy combat boots pounded against the marble floor of the grand foyer.

"You’re too late, Julian," Marcus laughed, his pistol trembling as he aimed it dead center at Julian’s chest. "The foundation you built is rotting from the inside out. Those aren't federal agents out front anymore. Those are my men."

Julian took a slow, calculated breath. He could hear shouting coming from the hallway—distinct, professional commands that didn't sound like frantic mercenaries, but rather disciplined tactical units. He kept his posture completely rigid, his black tuxedo unblemished, the white rose still pinned firmly to his lapel.

"Your men are currently staring down the barrel of a federal tactical strike team that I authorized thirty minutes ago," Julian said smoothly, his voice cutting through the chaos of the room. "You honestly believe I didn't audit your shell companies the moment Helena hired you as a 'consultant'?"

Marcus’s smile faltered. The color drained from his face as the heavy thud of boots stopped right outside the double doors of the East Salon.

"That’s a lie," Marcus stammered, taking a nervous step backward toward the French doors leading to the garden. "The feds wouldn't move this fast. We bribed the regional director!"

"My brother is the Deputy Attorney General," Julian replied quietly, taking one step forward. "He didn't need a regional director."

Before Marcus could raise the pistol to fire, the heavy double doors of the salon were kicked inward with staggering force. Two federal operators in full tactical gear—black helmets, ballistic vests, and submachine guns raised—rushed into the room, their movements precise and blindingly fast.

"Drop the weapon! Down on the ground! Now!" the lead operator barked, his voice echoing off the high ceilings.

Marcus panicked, swinging the barrel of his gun toward the tactical team. Julian moved with shocking speed, lunging forward and striking Marcus’s wrist upward just as the gun went off. The bullet shattered a stained-glass transom window above the door.

Within a fraction of a second, the tactical operators tackled Marcus to the Persian rug, pinning him facedown with a sickening thud. The metal handcuffs clicked into place with absolute finality.

Julian straightened his jacket, brushing a speck of dust from his sleeve. He looked down at Marcus, who was spitting blood and cursing into the carpet.

"Take him to holding," Julian ordered the tactical lead. Then, his eyes narrowed as he noticed something missing. "Where is Helena?"

The operator stood up, adjusting his helmet, and pointed a gloved finger toward the shattered French doors at the back of the salon.

"She’s gone, sir," the operator said grimly. "She used the confusion to slip out the back. And she took the nursery monitor with her."

Julian’s blood ran cold. He pulled out his smartphone, tapping the app that controlled the estate’s internal cameras, only to watch the screen flash bright red with a single word: OFFLINE.
