Chapter 4 - The Nursery Secret

Julian’s footsteps echoed rhythmically down the carpeted corridor toward the nursery, leaving a shattered Helena behind on the hallway floor. The nursery was bathed in soft, natural light filtering through sheer white curtains. Inside, the room smelled faintly of lavender baby powder and warm milk. The tiny newborn in the yellow blanket was sleeping peacefully in the mahogany crib, completely oblivious to the chaos consuming the rest of the mansion.

Martha hurried after Julian, her black dress whispering against the floorboards. She caught up to him just as he reached the changing table where a diaper bag sat unzipped.

"Mr. Vance, are you sure it’s in there?" Martha asked, her voice dropping to a nervous whisper as she glanced back toward the hallway to ensure Helena hadn't followed them. "I only noticed her fidgeting with that bag late last night while you were still in the study."

Julian nodded slowly, sliding his hand into the side pocket of the designer canvas bag. His fingers brushed against a cold, metallic object. He pulled it out: a small, encrypted black flash drive, identical to the ones used by Vance Logistics’ internal cybersecurity team.

"She wasn't just stealing capital, Martha," Julian said, his voice laced with quiet fury as he turned the drive over in his palm. "She was downloading our proprietary supply chain algorithms—the very ones we secured defense contracts with last month."

Martha gasped, covering her mouth with her hand. "To sell to competitors? But that’s federal treason, Mr. Vance. Not just corporate theft."

"Exactly," Julian replied. He slipped the flash drive into his tuxedo pocket, right next to his smartphone. "She thought she could use our child as a pawn to secure a fast-track divorce settlement, walk away with half the estate, and leave me holding the criminal liability if the board caught wind of the data breach."

From downstairs, the muffled sound of heavy footsteps and shouting could be heard echoing through the grand foyer. The federal agents had entered the house. The heavy oak front doors had been unlocked by the head of security, letting in the brisk morning air and the muted murmurs of confused wedding guests who were now being corralled into the East Salon away from the main entrance.

Martha reached out, gently touching Julian’s arm. "What about the baby, sir? When they take her... what happens to the child?"

Julian looked over at the crib. The newborn stirred slightly, letting out a soft sigh before settling back into a deep, innocent sleep. A profound tenderness softened the hard lines around Julian’s eyes, contrasting sharply with the cold resolve he had shown Helena just moments before.

"My mother is already on her private jet flying in from Geneva," Julian said firmly. "She will take custody of the child the moment Child Protective Services clears the estate. Helena will never touch my child again."

A sudden, sharp knock sounded on the nursery door. Julian turned his head, expecting federal agents, but instead found the pale face of the head of security standing in the threshold, looking entirely panicked.

"Sir," the security head stammered, breathing heavily. "You need to come to the East Salon immediately. Someone just broke through the back service entrance."

Julian’s eyes narrowed instantly. "Who?"

May you like

"It’s not the police," the guard whispered, beads of sweat forming on his forehead. "It’s Helena’s brother, and he’s holding a gun."
