Chapter 2 - The Sound of Breaking Glass

Helena froze in the doorway, the silk of her white robe whispering against the doorframe. Her eyes darted from Julian’s stern face to Martha, who instinctively pulled the newborn baby closer to her chest. The silence in the hallway suddenly felt suffocating, heavier than the massive crystal chandelier hanging above them. Helena’s breath hitched, but she quickly masked her panic with a sharp, defensive glare. She lowered the smartphone slowly from her ear, her fingers trembling slightly against the sleek glass screen.
"Julian," Helena said, her voice dropping into a dangerously sweet register. "How long have you been standing out here?"
Julian did not move an inch. He kept his posture rigid, the black tuxedo and the crisp bow tie framing a man who had just severed a lifetime of trust in a single second. He looked past her, catching the reflection of the vanity lights in the bedroom mirror, where a second smartphone lay face down next to an open jewelry box filled with uncashed cashier's checks.
"Long enough to know that the nine figures you were bragging about aren't going into your personal account, Helena," Julian replied smoothly. "And long enough to realize why you insisted on a double ceremony today."
Helena took a step forward, her bare feet silencing her movement on the hardwood. "You are twisting things. I was talking to my wealth manager about portfolio diversification. You're paranoid, Julian. The wedding guests are waiting downstairs, and the caterers are already serving champagne."
Martha turned her back slightly, shielding the baby from the rising hostility in the air. "Ma'am, please. The baby just fell asleep," Martha murmured, her voice a fragile barrier against the escalating tension.
Julian raised his hand, gesturing for Martha to step back down the corridor toward the nursery wing. Martha didn't need to be told twice; she retreated quickly, her black-and-white uniform rustling softly. Julian locked his dark eyes onto his wife, refusing to let her deflection work. He stepped closer, invading her personal space without touching her.
"My wealth manager happens to be my brother, Helena," Julian said quietly. "And he doesn't handle your secret offshore accounts in the Caymans. Nor does he help people forge prenuptial amendments behind my back."
Helena’s mask completely shattered. Her lips parted, but no sound came out as the reality of her exposure set in. She looked desperately toward the stairs, calculating her escape route if the truth came to light.
"You can't do anything to me," Helena hissed, her voice losing its polished veneer. "The house, the accounts, the assets—they're all legally protected by our joint filings."
Julian smiled, a cold, humorless expression that didn't reach his eyes. He tapped the screen of his smartphone, where a live video feed of the front gates began to stream.
"Not anymore," Julian whispered. "Look at who just pulled up in the driveway."
