Chapter 1 - The Chandelier and the Confession

The crystal chandelier in the grand hallway of the Vance estate cast a warm, amber glow over the plush Persian rug. Julian Vance stood completely still, his black tuxedo immaculate, the white rose pinned to his lapel looking impossibly pristine against the dark fabric. His dark wavy hair was neatly combed, and his trimmed beard caught the light as he stared down the corridor. Martha, the forty-year-old maid whose blonde hair was pulled back in a neat bun, stood before him clutching a tiny newborn baby swaddled tightly in a bright yellow blanket. Martha’s expression was tight with anxiety, her fingers gripping the fabric of her black dress.
"Don’t go downstairs yet," Martha said softly, her voice barely carrying over the distant hum of the wedding guests gathering below. "You need to hear this."
Julian’s chest rose and fell in a slow, measured breath. He didn't flinch, nor did his expression break into anger. He merely tilted his head toward the master bedroom door, which stood slightly ajar. From inside, the soft light of a Hollywood-style vanity spilled out onto the hardwood floor. Helena Vance, his wife of three years, sat before the mirror. Her dark hair was styled in an intricate updo, and she wore a luxurious white silk robe edged with delicate lace. She held a sleek smartphone pressed tightly to her ear, completely unaware that the door was cracked open.
"His company just hit nine figures," Helena spoke into the phone, her tone dripping with calculated coldness. "You think I’m throwing that away?"
Julian listened, his jaw tightening just slightly, revealing the restrained tension in his trimmed beard. He looked forward with a stern, unyielding expression, the white rose on his lapel catching the amber light of the chandelier. Martha shifted the sleeping newborn in the yellow blanket, her eyes wide with sympathetic dread as she looked up at her employer.
"Mr. Vance, what are you going to do?" Martha whispered, the urgency in her voice trembling against the silent walls of the estate.
Julian pulled his own smartphone from his pocket, his thumb swiping across the screen with deliberate precision. He stared at the glowing display, his eyes narrowing as he read a freshly arrived financial alert. A cold resolve settled over his features.
"Stop the marriage license from being filed," Julian said, his voice deep, calm, and absolute. "She has no idea what’s waiting downstairs."

Helena slammed her bedroom door wide open, her face draining of all color as she looked directly at them.
