Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs Shut

A heavy, gloved hand clamped firmly over Lily’s mouth before she could scream, cutting off her breath and sending a wave of absolute terror through her small frame. The leather-bound journal slipped from her grasp, hitting the floor with a dull thud. Her pink backpack scraped against the underside of the mahogany desk as she was forcefully pulled backward out of the hiding spot by a powerful grip.
“Quiet, little girl,” Julian Vance’s voice whispered coldly right beside her temple, his breath smelling faintly of expensive scotch and mint. “Curiosity has a very high price, and your mother already paid most of it.”
Before Julian could secure his hold or drag her deeper into the shadows, a blinding beam of light flooded the foyer as the backup generator kicked in with a loud mechanical hum. The crystal chandelier overhead blazed to life, illuminating the scene in stark, unforgiving detail.
“Freeze, Mr. Vance! Hands where we can see them!” Detective Miller shouted, her service weapon raised and aimed squarely at Julian’s chest. Two other officers flanked her, their rifles ready.
Julian slowly released his grip on Lily, raising his tattooed hands into the air with a theatrical sigh. His black suit was immaculate, completely unbothered by the chaos, though a cold, calculated smile played at the corner of his lips. He didn't look like a cornered rat; he looked like a man who knew a secret everyone else was dying to uncover.
Lily scrambled forward on her hands and knees, ignoring the stinging scrape on her elbow, and grabbed the leather-bound journal and the flash drive from the floor, shoving them deep into her pink backpack alongside the white teddy bear keychain.
“He’s lying!” Lily cried out, turning to Detective Miller while pointing a shaking finger at Julian. “He has the rest of mommy’s papers in his private safe behind the painting!”
Detective Miller nodded sharply to her subordinate, who immediately moved to cuff Julian’s wrists behind his back. The metal handcuffs clicked shut with a sharp, final sound.
“You’re making a grave error, Detective,” Julian said smoothly, his eyes locking onto the little girl with a terrifying intensity as the officers led him toward the front doors. “That journal she just picked up? It doesn’t just prove I stole designs. It proves her mother built the foundation of this entire company on stolen land.”

Lily froze, her hand gripping the strap of her pink backpack so tightly her knuckles turned white.
