Chapter 3 - The Warrant at the Door

The sudden rustle of heavy fabric and the firm tread of combat boots on the pristine marble floor startled everyone in the grand hallway. The lead police officer, a stern woman with iron-gray hair pinned neatly back, strode forward without a hint of hesitation. She bypassed the sobbing maid and stopped directly in front of Julian Vance, pulling a folded document from her tactical vest.

“Mr. Julian Vance?” the officer asked, her voice carrying absolute authority. “I am Detective Sarah Miller. We have a warrant to search this entire estate, including your private study and server room, based on credible evidence of corporate fraud, extortion, and wrongful exploitation of intellectual property.”

Julian stood up slowly, smoothly brushing an imaginary speck of dust off his black suit sleeve. He didn't look surprised anymore; instead, a chilling calm settled over him, the kind born of immense wealth and expensive legal defense teams. He glanced at the middle-aged man with the clipboard, who gave a microscopic nod before quietly slipping toward the side exit.

“Detective Miller, you are welcome to look around,” Julian said, his voice entirely steady, though his tattooed hand remained clenched tightly by his side. “My legal counsel will provide you with all necessary corporate filings. I assure you, this is all a terrible misunderstanding orchestrated by a disgruntled former employee.”

“Mommy wasn’t disgruntled! She was dying!” Lily screamed, lunging forward, but the maid gently caught the little girl’s shoulders, holding her back while tears streamed down the young woman's face.

Detective Miller glanced down at Lily, noting the white teddy bear keychain dangling from the pink backpack. The officer’s hard expression softened momentarily before she locked eyes with Julian again.

“Mr. Vance, this isn’t just about corporate paperwork anymore. The ledger contains encrypted audio files of your conversations with Elena Brooks during her final weeks,” Detective Miller stated, pulling a small drive from her pocket. “Threatening a terminally ill mother to sign away her life's work crosses the line from civil dispute to criminal coercion.”

Julian’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. For the first time, the polished facade cracked just enough for a flash of genuine desperation to show. He knew those audio files didn't just exist on his private server; Elena had kept a backup somewhere secure.

“You’re making a massive mistake,” Julian warned, taking a slow step toward the detective.

Before Detective Miller could reply, the lights in the entire mansion flickered violently and died, plunging the grand hallway into total darkness, save for the flashing red and blue lights of police cruisers outside.
