Chapter 14 - The Final Collision

The violent impact sent the massive black SUV careening off the edge of the asphalt and tumbling down the steep embankment of the canyon, crashing loudly through the dense brush below. The masked operative outside the cruiser stumbled backward in shock, his rifle flying from his hands as he lost his balance on the loose gravel.

“Now!” Detective Miller screamed, slamming her foot hard on the gas pedal.

The police cruiser surged forward, roaring past the wreckage of the blocked road and speeding away into the dark canyon night. In the rearview mirror, Lily watched as the second vehicle—a battered unmarked federal transport van driven by two loyal agents—sped past them to block any potential pursuit from the canyon floor.

Arthur let out a ragged breath, leaning back against the seat with a mixture of shock and profound relief. He reached out and gently patted Lily’s hand.

“You are truly your mother’s daughter, Lily,” Arthur said softly, his voice trembling slightly with emotion. “Unstoppable.”

Ten minutes later, the police cruiser pulled smoothly through the heavily fortified gates of the Federal District Courthouse downtown. Armed federal marshals stood at attention along the marble steps, securing the perimeter against any further interference.

Detective Miller killed the engine, turned around in her seat, and looked back at the little girl.

“We’re here, Lily. The federal prosecutor is waiting inside his chambers right now,” Detective Miller said, offering a reassuring, exhausted smile. “Are you ready to finish this?”

Lily nodded firmly. She zipped her pink backpack shut, making sure the white teddy bear keychain was hanging correctly, and clutched the leather-bound journal and the flash drive tightly in her small hands.

As they walked up the grand marble steps of the courthouse, flanked by armed marshals, the heavy oak doors swung open to reveal a brightly lit hallway lined with journalists, federal investigators, and officials.

Standing near the center of the room, flanked by two bewildered federal guards, was Julian Vance. His black suit was still impeccably pressed, but his hands were securely cuffed in steel shackles. When his dark eyes locked onto seven-year-old Lily walking proudly through the doors, holding her mother’s journal, the color completely drained from his face.

Julian opened his mouth to speak, but before he could utter a single word, the federal judge stepped out from his chambers, banging his gavel once with a sharp, echoing crack.
