Chapter 10 - Flames in the Foyer

The chilling command echoed off the high vaulted ceilings of the grand hallway, stripping away any remaining illusion of safety. The lead operative lowered his rifle barrel slightly, his masked face turning toward the sweeping staircase.
“You heard the boss,” the operative muttered to his men, pulling a heavy metal canister from his tactical belt and twisting the pin with a sharp clack.
“No! You cowards!” Detective Miller roared from behind the mahogany desk, firing two warning shots into the high plaster ceiling, showering the foyer in white dust and debris. “Drop that smoke canister or I will return fire!”
The mercenaries didn't hesitate. The operative hurled the canister across the marble floor, where it spun wildly before erupting into a thick, choking cloud of dark grey smoke that smelled intensely of sulfur and burning plastic.
Chaos erupted instantly. The young maid screamed in horror, coughing violently as the toxic fog rolled over her, blinding her completely. Arthur Pendelton stumbled backward, coughing hard as his aging lungs rebelled against the smoke, clutching his chest with one hand while using his wooden cane to stay upright.
Behind the velvet curtain, Lily pressed her face against the rough fabric, holding her breath while her small fingers zipped the pink backpack shut. Through the stinging smoke, she could see the faint glow of the red and blue emergency lights flashing through the front windows. She knew she couldn't stay hidden for long.
“Arthur! Grab the girl!” Detective Miller shouted through a coughing fit, firing another blind shot toward the doorway to keep the mercenaries from advancing.
Arthur reached blindly into the thick smoke, his hand sweeping across the floor until his fingers brushed against the fabric of Lily’s pink dress.
“I’ve got you, child! Keep low!” Arthur wheezed, grabbing her small hand and pulling her out from behind the curtain.
The heat was rising rapidly as flames licked at the edge of the living room rug near the entrance. The mercenaries had already retreated through the front doors, firing a suppressing volley to cover their escape into the night, leaving the burning foyer behind them.
Detective Miller sprinted over, grabbing Arthur by the arm to help support his weight, while using her other hand to shield Lily.
“We have to get out of here through the side courtyard now!” Detective Miller ordered, coughing violently as the flames began to engulf the grand staircase.
Arthur paused, his milky eye staring toward the burning desk.

“Wait… the flash drive… I dropped it when they pushed me!” Arthur gasped, pointing a shaky finger into the heart of the fire.
