Chapter 4 - Darkness in the Foyer

The sudden blackout swallowed the opulent mansion hallway in pitch blackness, freezing everyone in their tracks. The frantic flashing of police emergency lights through the tall arched windows cast long, eerie crimson and azure shadows dancing across the marble walls. In the dim strobing light, Lily’s pink dress looked almost blood-red, and the white teddy bear keychain seemed to glow ghost-like against the dark fabric of her backpack.

“Stay where you are! Nobody moves!” Detective Miller’s voice rang out sharply, accompanied by the metallic click of a holster being unclipped.

Julian Vance didn't make a sound. In the strobing shadows, his tall silhouette remained rooted near the grand staircase. The middle-aged man in the dark grey suit was gone, vanished into the gloom before the power cut. The sobbing maid gasped in terror, her fingers digging desperately into Lily’s shoulders as she tried to pull the little girl closer to the wall for safety.

“Let go of me! I have to find mommy’s safe!” Lily whispered fiercely, wriggling out of the maid’s terrified grip with surprising agility.

“Lily, no! It’s too dangerous!” the maid choked out, her voice trembling so hard she could barely form the words.

Ignoring the warning, Lily dropped to her hands and knees. Familiar with the layout of the sprawling foyer from the days when her mother used to bring her along to drop off blueprints, she crawled swiftly toward the heavy mahogany desk beneath the grand staircase. Her small fingers brushed against the carved wood, searching blindly in the dark for the hidden floor panel her mother had whispered about on her deathbed.

Clack.

The sound of a heavy boot shifting on the marble floors echoed dangerously close. A flashlight beam cut through the darkness, sweeping wildly across the room. The harsh white light missed Lily by mere inches, illuminating the spot where Julian Vance had been standing just seconds before. But Julian wasn't there anymore.

Lily held her breath, pressing her back flat against the mahogany desk. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs like a trapped bird. Her hand brushed against a cold metal ring set into the floorboards beneath the desk. She pulled upward with all her might, and a small hidden compartment popped open with a faint hiss.

Inside the dark recess sat a heavy, old-fashioned leather-bound journal and a single flash drive labeled with her mother's handwriting.

“I found you,” a low, chilling voice whispered directly behind her ear in the darkness.
