Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Ledger

The silence in the hallway grew thick enough to suffocate, broken only by the muffled, rhythmic ticking of a grandfather clock in the corner. Julian Vance stared at the middle-aged man in the dark grey suit, his jaw tightening until the muscles ached. The black ink tattoos on his hand seemed to pulse as he gripped the edge of his tailored jacket, fighting to maintain his legendary composure.

“Who sent it?” Julian demanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low register that made the sobbing maid shrink back further into the shadows.

The man with the clipboard adjusted his glasses, his eyes darting nervously toward Lily before looking back at his employer.

“We don't know the exact sender yet, sir, but the metadata points to an external server registered under your late lead designer's name—Elena Vance, or rather, Elena Brooks before her marriage,” the man replied, tapping the metal clip of the board. “And that’s not all. The local authorities are already requesting a warrant to audit the offshore accounts linked to her unfinished contract.”

Lily stood her ground, her small pink backpack feeling heavier by the second. She didn't fully understand the corporate jargon, but she recognized the panic flashing across Julian’s face. Her mother had spent countless nights at the kitchen table, coughing into a handkerchief while sketching brilliant architectural designs that Julian later claimed as his own. Elena had trusted him, believing his smooth promises of financial security for her daughter's future.

“My mommy told me you were a thief before she closed her eyes forever,” Lily said clearly, her young voice cutting through the tension like glass.

Julian slowly turned his head to look down at the little girl. The restrained anger in his expression morphed into something calculating, a cold mask settling over his handsome features. He took a deliberate step toward her, towering over her small frame.

“Your mother was a dreamer, Lily. Dreams don’t pay the overhead for a firm this size,” Julian said smoothly, though a bead of sweat rolled down his temple. He knelt down slightly so he was at eye level with her. “You should pack up your teddy bear and let the maid take you out of here. Grown-up business is far too ugly for a child with pink ribbons.”

“I’m not leaving until you give me what belongs to my mom,” Lily whispered fiercely, refusing to blink. “And you’re going to regret lying to us.”

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the mansion burst open, and three police officers in uniform stepped into the foyer, holding a signed search warrant.
