Chapter 1 - The Weight of a Broken Vow

The cold marble of the grand hallway echoed with the sharp, trembling voice of a child refusing to be silenced. Seven-year-old Lily stood firmly planted on the polished floor, her light brown hair braided into neat pigtails tied with bright pink ribbons. Her white collared blouse was pressed, but her pink dress was slightly rumpled from the confrontation. On her back hung her small pink backpack, the white teddy bear keychain dangling from the zipper, swaying slightly with every agitated movement of her small body.

A few feet away stood Julian Vance, a tall, handsome man dressed impeccably in a black suit, black shirt, and a stark black tie. His dark hair was neatly styled, and his trimmed beard framed a face entirely devoid of warmth. Ink-black tattoos peeked out from beneath the cuff of his shirt, wrapping around his hand as he clenched his fingers into a tight fist. Behind Lily, a young maid in a traditional black dress with a crisp white collar and matching headband sobbed quietly into her apron, her shoulders shaking with fear and exhaustion.

Lily pointed a small finger straight at Julian’s chest, her eyes blazing with a grief far too heavy for her age.

“You promised mommy her money!” Lily shouted, her voice cracking slightly with raw fury. “Why did you lie?”

Julian didn't flinch, though a subtle twitch near his left eye betrayed his irritation. He exhaled slowly, his chest rising and falling beneath the expensive fabric of his black suit.

“Life isn’t a fairytale, Lily,” Julian replied coldly, his voice deep and controlled. “Your mother signed a contract. Contracts are binding, whether she finished the work or not.”

“She died because she was working too hard for you!” Lily yelled back, stepping closer despite the terrifying aura the man projected. “You took her designs and you threw her away like trash!”

Before Julian could offer another rehearsed excuse, a middle-aged man in a dark grey suit and matching tie stepped out from the shadows near the sweeping staircase. He held a silver clipboard tightly against his chest, flipping a page with a crisp snap.

“Mr. Vance,” the man in the grey suit interrupted, his voice dry and devoid of emotion. “We have a serious problem. The police just received an anonymous package containing your company's encrypted financial ledgers.”

Julian’s face drained of color, his dark eyes instantly shifting from the defiant little girl to the terrifying contents of the clipboard.
