Chapter 12 - The Safe House

The cool night air hit their faces like a splash of ice water as Detective Miller half-carried Arthur Pendelton and held Lily tightly against her side, pulling them away from the collapsing wreckage of the burning mansion. Sirens wailed loudly in the distance, growing closer by the second as fire trucks and backup units finally navigated the winding private roads of the estate.
They bundled into the back of an unmarked police cruiser waiting near the perimeter fence. The interior of the car was quiet, save for the rhythmic clicking of the radio and the heavy, ragged breathing of Arthur, who was slumped against the backseat door, clutching his chest with a trembling hand.
Detective Miller slammed the driver's side door shut, locked the automatic doors, and immediately plugged a secure tactical handheld radio into the dashboard.
“Dispatch, this is Miller. The primary estate is fully compromised. Arson confirmed. Requesting immediate medical unit for an elderly civilian and a secure transport to the federal safe house downtown. Over,” she spoke rapidly, her eyes darting nervously to her rearview mirror.
A crackle of static replied immediately. “Copy that, Miller. Safe house Delta is prepped. Stay off the main grid; we have intercepted chatter indicating Vance’s corporate security is hunting your vehicle.”
Detective Miller dropped the radio, slammed her foot on the accelerator, and peeled away from the burning ruins into the dark, winding mountain roads.
In the backseat, Lily carefully unzipped her soot-covered pink backpack. She pulled out the scorched leather-bound journal and the small metal flash drive, placing them neatly on the seat between her and Arthur. The white teddy bear keychain was blackened on one side, but it was still intact.
Arthur turned his head slowly, looking down at the items with a grim, exhausted expression. He reached out a trembling hand and picked up the flash drive.
“You have no idea what you’re holding, little one,” Arthur whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. “This flash drive doesn't just contain financial records. It contains the encryption key to the main servers holding every patent Julian stole over the last decade.”
“Can we use it to put him away forever?” Lily asked, her large eyes reflecting the amber glow of the dashboard lights.
Arthur looked at her for a long moment, a sad, complicated smile touching his lips.
“Only if we can reach the federal prosecutor before Julian’s lawyers block the warrant,” Arthur replied, leaning back against the headrest. “And Julian still has one final, very dangerous card to play.”

Before Lily could ask what that card was, the tires of the police cruiser screeched loudly as a massive black SUV slammed onto the road directly in front of them, blocking their path completely.
