Chapter 15 - Justice for Elena

The heavy wooden gavel struck the judge’s block with a crisp, echoing crack that silenced every murmur in the packed federal courtroom. Judge Thomas adjusted his glasses, looking down from his elevated wooden bench with a solemn, uncompromising expression.
“The court has reviewed the original deed submitted by Arthur Pendelton, verified the digital audit trails provided via the flash drive, and listened to the encrypted audio logs recovered from the late Elena Brooks's personal files,” Judge Thomas announced, his deep voice carrying clearly across the silent room. “The evidence of corporate fraud, extortion, intellectual property theft, and coercion orchestrated by Julian Vance is absolute and overwhelming.”
Julian Vance stood at the defense table, his tailored black suit looking like a shroud. He didn't look at the judge; instead, his cold, calculating eyes remained fixed on the front row of the gallery, where seven-year-old Lily sat quietly beside Arthur Pendelton. Lily’s pink backpack rested safely on the wooden pew beside her, the white teddy bear keychain catching the bright light streaming through the tall stained-glass windows.
“Based on these findings,” Judge Thomas continued, raising his pen to sign the final ruling, “all fraudulent asset transfers executed by Vance Enterprises over the past twenty years are hereby declared null and void. Ownership of the foundational patents and the original estate is officially restored to Arthur Pendelton and, by rightful inheritance, to the estate of Elena Brooks.”
A collective gasp of shock and relief swept through the courtroom gallery. The young maid, sitting a few rows back, burst into quiet, joyful tears, covering her face with her hands as the heavy burden of fear finally lifted from her shoulders.
“Furthermore, Julian Vance is sentenced to twenty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole for criminal conspiracy and wrongful exploitation,” the judge concluded, bringing the gavel down one final time.
Two federal marshals immediately stepped forward, placing their hands firmly on Julian’s shoulders and turning him toward the exit. Julian offered no resistance, his handsome face frozen in a bitter, hollow mask as he was led out of the courtroom in disgrace, his corporate empire completely dismantled by the unyielding determination of a little girl.
Arthur turned to Lily, a warm, tearful smile breaking across his weathered face. He reached out, gently straightening the pink ribbons in her light brown hair.

“Your mother would be so proud of you, Lily,” Arthur whispered softly.
Lily looked down at her pink backpack, then up at the bright, clear sky visible through the courthouse windows. The heavy weight in her chest was gone, replaced by a quiet, enduring peace. She knew her mother was finally resting, and the promise made so long ago had finally been kept.
