Chapter 9 - The Emeralds Of Zurich

"Liam's luggage tag... how is that possible?" Elena whispered, turning the heavy gold-trimmed tag over in her palm to inspect the engraved monogram.
"Because Liam has been connected to this property and this family long before he ever met you, Elena," Arthur said gravely, stepping closer to examine the antique wooden jewelry box.
"What do you mean? Liam was a corporate consultant from New York when we met in London three years ago," Elena protested, though her voice lacked conviction as the chilling pieces of the puzzle began to snap together.
"People like Liam don't just appear out of thin air with millions of dollars in offshore accounts and an obsession with buying historical villas," Arthur replied, unlatching the antique jewelry box with trembling fingers.
Inside the velvet-lined interior rested a collection of priceless emerald necklaces and diamond rings, sparkling brilliantly even under the dim moonlight of the drained pool.
"These were my mother's jewels," Elena gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as tears welled up in her eyes. "They were stolen from our family safe in Geneva thirty years ago—the exact night Marcus disappeared."
"And the police report at the time blamed Marcus for the theft," Arthur continued, his voice heavy with the burden of decades-old guilt. "I believed them because the evidence was planted so meticulously."
"Planted by whom? If Marcus didn't do it..." Elena began, her voice trailing off as she looked down at the gold-trimmed luggage tag in her hand.
"By Liam's father, Viktor Carter. He was our head of security back then, before he mysteriously retired and moved his family to Zurich," Arthur revealed, the dark secret finally coming to light.
Elena staggered backward against the concrete wall of the pool basin, the magnitude of the betrayal crushing her spirit completely. "Liam isn't just a con man... he's carrying on a generational vendetta against our family."
"He didn't just stumble into your life, Elena. He targeted you deliberately to finish what his father started three decades ago," Arthur said, placing a protective hand on her arm.
Suddenly, the harsh beam of a high-powered flashlight cut through the darkness from the top of the pool patio, blinding them with its intense glare.
"Hey! What the hell are you two doing down in that drained pool? Drop the tools and put your hands where we can see them!" a stern police officer shouted from the edge of the basin.
Arthur slowly lowered the crowbar, keeping himself positioned in front of Elena to shield her from the officers descending the pool ladder.
"Dad, look behind them," Elena whispered, her blood running cold as she pointed toward the far end of the villa's garden.

Emerging from the shadows of the palm trees was a tall, silver-haired man in a dark winter coat—an older man who bore an unmistakable, chilling resemblance to Liam.
